Retinal floaters
I have floaters and undergo regular check-ups (just had my pupils dilated during winter break).
A few days ago, after taking a shower, I noticed that whenever I blink my left eye, a bright spot appears in the center of my vision and quickly disappears.
No matter where I move my eyes, this spot appears in the center of my line of sight, especially against a white background.
Additionally, it does not appear when I blink in the dark.
I would like to know what this could be.

Flashing lights in your vision, especially when accompanied by other symptoms like floaters, can be concerning and warrant a thorough understanding of potential causes. Given your history of myopia and floaters, it’s important to consider several factors that could contribute to the phenomenon you are experiencing.
Firstly, the appearance of light spots or flashes in your vision, particularly when blinking, may be related to the vitreous gel within your eye. The vitreous is a clear gel-like substance that fills the space between the lens and the retina. As we age or due to certain conditions, the vitreous can undergo changes, such as liquefaction or detachment from the retina. These changes can lead to the perception of flashes of light, especially when the vitreous pulls on the retina during blinking or eye movement. This is often referred to as "photopsia."
In your case, since you mentioned that the flashes occur primarily when you blink and are more noticeable against a white background, it could indicate that the light is being refracted or scattered by the vitreous gel or even the retina itself. The fact that these flashes do not appear in darkness suggests that they are likely related to the way your eye is processing light in different environments.
Another important consideration is the presence of floaters. Floaters are tiny clumps of gel or cells that float in the vitreous and can cast shadows on the retina, leading to visual disturbances. If you have a significant number of floaters, they can sometimes be associated with the perception of flashing lights, particularly if they are moving or if the vitreous is shifting.
While these phenomena can be benign, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If the flashes become more frequent, persistent, or are accompanied by a sudden increase in floaters, a curtain-like shadow in your vision, or any significant changes in your visual acuity, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of more serious conditions, such as retinal tears or detachments, which require prompt intervention.
Regular eye examinations are vital, especially for individuals with high myopia, as they are at a higher risk for retinal issues. Your recent dilated eye exam is a good step in ensuring your retinal health, but if you notice any new symptoms, don’t hesitate to return to your eye care professional for further evaluation.
In summary, while the flashing lights you are experiencing could be related to benign changes in the vitreous or retina, it is essential to remain vigilant. Keep track of your symptoms, and if there are any changes or concerns, consult with your eye doctor promptly. Your eye health is paramount, and understanding these visual phenomena can help you manage your condition effectively.
