After cataract surgery, there is a light gray ring pattern on the sclera?
Hello, doctor! My sister had cataract surgery, and the day after the bandage was removed, she noticed a ring pattern on the sclera, but it is currently not affecting her vision.
Her previous eye surgery did not have this phenomenon.
A few days ago, I also had surgery on both eyes without this issue! The surgeon mentioned that it is due to pressure from the equipment and will gradually disappear.
It has been a week, and it has not completely disappeared yet.
Could you please tell me how long it will take to resolve? Will it affect her vision in the future? Thank you!

Hello, Nails: I apologize, but I cannot diagnose based on your description, nor do I know how long it will take to resolve.
I recommend consulting your surgeon for the best advice.
The lines on the sclera generally do not affect vision.

After cataract surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to notice various changes in the appearance of their eyes, including gray lines or markings on the sclera (the white part of the eye). These lines can be a result of several factors related to the surgical procedure and the healing process.
The gray lines you mentioned are likely due to pressure marks from the surgical instruments used during the operation. During cataract surgery, the eye is manipulated, and the use of various tools can sometimes leave temporary impressions or markings on the sclera. These marks are generally harmless and are expected to fade as the eye heals.
Typically, these pressure marks can take anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks to resolve completely, depending on the individual’s healing process. Factors such as the extent of the surgery, the individual’s overall health, and their body's healing response can all influence the duration of these marks. In most cases, they do not indicate any underlying complications and should not affect visual acuity.
It is important to monitor the eye for any signs of complications, such as increased redness, swelling, pain, or changes in vision. If any of these symptoms occur, it is advisable to consult with the ophthalmologist who performed the surgery. They can provide a thorough examination to ensure that the healing process is proceeding as expected and that no complications are developing.
In terms of visual impact, the gray lines themselves typically do not affect vision. However, if there are any concerns about vision changes or if the lines persist longer than expected, it is essential to seek medical advice. The surgeon can assess whether the lines are indeed pressure marks or if they are indicative of another issue, such as a corneal abrasion or other post-operative complications.
In conclusion, while the gray lines on the eyeball after cataract surgery can be concerning, they are usually a temporary phenomenon related to the surgical process. They should gradually fade without impacting vision. However, maintaining open communication with the healthcare provider is crucial for addressing any concerns and ensuring a smooth recovery. If the lines do not disappear within a reasonable timeframe or if there are any changes in vision, a follow-up appointment is warranted to rule out any potential complications.
