Eye problems
Hello, Doctor Gao...
I have a few questions.
1.
I have had floaters for less than two months, and they seem to be increasing in number.
The original floaters have longer tails, and recently, a faint new one has appeared.
I went for an examination, and the doctor said there are no tears.
Why do they keep increasing, and what could be the reason?
2.
I spend about four hours a day on the computer, usually taking breaks after about an hour.
Could the computer usage be causing the increase in floaters? I maintain a distance of at least fifty centimeters from the screen.
3.
How can I prevent the floaters from increasing?

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology
Hello: These symptoms are manifestations of vitreous degeneration, which is a natural physiological degenerative process and is not related to computer use.
It cannot be prevented.
In Taiwan, the ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
Online responses can only serve as a reference; if necessary, it is important to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility.
We hope to have the opportunity to serve you.

More Info
Increased floaters in your vision, particularly if you have recently developed them, can be concerning. Floaters, or "muscae volitantes," are small spots or strands that drift through your field of vision. They are typically caused by changes in the vitreous humor, the gel-like substance that fills the eye. As we age, the vitreous can become more liquid and may pull away from the retina, leading to the perception of floaters. This process can be exacerbated in individuals with high myopia (nearsightedness), as they are more prone to vitreous degeneration and detachment.
1. Why Are Floaters Increasing?
The increase in floaters you are experiencing could be attributed to several factors. First, the natural aging process can lead to further liquefaction of the vitreous, which may result in more floaters becoming apparent. Additionally, if you have had a recent increase in visual strain or have been more active in activities that involve looking at screens, this could also contribute to your perception of more floaters. It's important to note that while floaters can be annoying, they are often benign, especially if your eye examinations have shown no signs of retinal tears or detachments.
2. Is Computer Use Contributing to More Floaters?
While prolonged computer use can lead to eye strain and discomfort, it is unlikely to directly cause an increase in floaters. However, excessive screen time can exacerbate your awareness of floaters, especially if you are experiencing symptoms of digital eye strain, such as dryness, fatigue, or blurred vision. Taking regular breaks, following the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds), and ensuring proper lighting and ergonomics can help alleviate discomfort associated with screen time.
3. How to Prevent an Increase in Floaters?
While there is no guaranteed way to prevent floaters from increasing, there are several strategies you can employ to maintain overall eye health. These include:
- Regular Eye Exams: Continue to have regular check-ups with your eye care professional. They can monitor any changes in your eye health and provide guidance tailored to your specific situation.
- Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Maintain a balanced diet rich in antioxidants (found in fruits and vegetables), omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins that support eye health, such as vitamins A, C, and E. Staying hydrated is also crucial.
- Protect Your Eyes: Wear sunglasses with UV protection when outdoors to shield your eyes from harmful rays, and consider blue light filters for your screens to reduce eye strain.
- Manage Screen Time: As you mentioned, you already take breaks while using the computer. Continue this practice and ensure that your workspace is ergonomically set up to reduce strain on your eyes.
- Stay Active: Regular physical activity can improve circulation, including to the eyes, which may help maintain overall eye health.
In summary, while the presence of floaters can be concerning, they are often a normal part of the aging process, especially in individuals with high myopia. Regular monitoring by an eye care professional is essential, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can support your overall eye health. If you notice any sudden changes in your vision, such as an increase in floaters, flashes of light, or a shadow in your peripheral vision, seek immediate medical attention, as these could be signs of a more serious condition.
