White bumps have appeared near the base of the penis and around the testicles?

Hello, I recently noticed small white bumps near my testicles and at the base of my penis.
They are quite numerous, painless, and itch-free.
I tried to touch them, but it seems like there is nothing to squeeze out; I can feel them when I touch, as they have a raised texture.
Is this a normal phenomenon or a sign of some kind of disease?

Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/05/04

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology

Without actually seeing the lesion, it is impossible to determine.
If it is very concerning, please seek medical attention as soon as possible.

More Info

When you notice white bumps near the penis and testicles, it can be concerning, but it’s important to understand that there are several potential causes, many of which are benign. Here’s a breakdown of some common causes and considerations regarding these white bumps.

1. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, white or skin-colored bumps that typically appear around the corona of the glans (the head of the penis). They are completely normal anatomical variations and are not associated with any disease or health risk. They are often mistaken for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) but are harmless and do not require treatment.

2. Sebaceous Cysts: These are small, non-painful lumps that can occur anywhere on the body, including the genital area. They are caused by blocked sebaceous glands and can appear white or yellowish. While they are generally harmless, if they become inflamed or infected, they may require medical attention.

3. Folliculitis: This condition occurs when hair follicles become inflamed, often due to infection or irritation. It can lead to small, red or white bumps that may be itchy or tender. Maintaining good hygiene and avoiding tight clothing can help prevent folliculitis.

4. Fordyce Spots: These are small, painless, pale bumps that are actually enlarged sebaceous glands. They are common and can appear on the shaft of the penis or the scrotum. Like pearly penile papules, they are not a cause for concern and do not require treatment.

5. Genital Warts: Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), these can appear as small, flesh-colored or white bumps. They may be raised or flat and can occur in clusters. If you suspect that your bumps may be warts, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider for evaluation and potential treatment.

6. Other Infections: Conditions such as molluscum contagiosum, a viral skin infection, can also cause small, painless bumps. These typically have a dimpled center and can spread through skin-to-skin contact.

7. Skin Conditions: Other dermatological conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, can also manifest as bumps or lesions in the genital area. These may be accompanied by itching or irritation.

Given that you mentioned the bumps are not painful or itchy and do not produce any discharge, it is likely that they are benign. However, it is always best to consult with a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis, especially if there are any changes in the appearance of the bumps, if new symptoms develop, or if you have concerns about sexually transmitted infections.

In summary, while many causes of white bumps near the penis and testicles are benign, it is crucial to have any new or concerning symptoms evaluated by a healthcare professional. They can provide a thorough examination and, if necessary, conduct tests to rule out any serious conditions. Remember, maintaining good genital hygiene and being aware of any changes in your body are key components of sexual health.
