Bone lengthening surgery

Doctor, may I ask if there are any practitioners in Taiwan performing internal bone lengthening surgeries using Albizzia or Guichet techniques? Additionally, could you recommend any doctors in Hong Kong or Singapore who specialize in this procedure? Thank you!

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics

Currently, I am not sure, but this type of lengthening surgery is rarely performed in Taiwan.
You can inquire at the pediatric orthopedic department of a medical center.
Albizzia or Guichet nails are a type of specialized intramedullary nail.
Once implanted into the medullary cavity of the femur or tibia, simply rotating the distal segment of the limb will gradually lengthen the bone.
The difference from traditional surgery is that it does not require the use of external fixators for lengthening.
Guichet nails are more commonly used in the UK.

When it comes to internal bone lengthening surgeries, such as the Albizzia or Guichet techniques, it's important to understand the current landscape of orthopedic practices in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. These methods involve the use of specialized intramedullary nails that allow for gradual bone lengthening through a controlled process, differing from traditional external fixation methods.

In Taiwan, the availability of these specific techniques may be limited. While some orthopedic surgeons may be familiar with the principles of bone lengthening, the actual implementation of the Albizzia or Guichet methods is not widely practiced. The Guichet nail, in particular, has seen more frequent use in the UK, and its adoption in other regions may vary based on local expertise and the availability of training in these specific techniques.

For patients seeking these procedures, it is advisable to consult with major medical centers that specialize in orthopedic surgery. These centers often have the resources and expertise to evaluate the feasibility of such surgeries. It is also beneficial to inquire specifically about the experience of the surgeons with these techniques, as the success of the surgery can heavily depend on the surgeon's familiarity with the method.

In Hong Kong and Singapore, the situation may be more favorable. Both regions have advanced medical facilities and a higher concentration of orthopedic specialists who may be more experienced with innovative surgical techniques, including internal bone lengthening. It would be prudent to research and reach out to orthopedic departments in reputable hospitals in these areas to find surgeons who have performed these specific procedures.

When considering surgery, it is crucial to have a thorough pre-operative assessment, including imaging studies to evaluate the bone structure and any existing deformities. This assessment will help the surgeon determine the most appropriate surgical approach and whether the desired lengthening can be achieved safely.

In addition to surgical options, patients should also consider the post-operative rehabilitation process, which is vital for achieving optimal outcomes. Physical therapy plays a significant role in recovery, helping to restore function and mobility while ensuring that the bone heals properly.

In summary, while the Albizzia and Guichet internal bone lengthening techniques may not be widely practiced in Taiwan, there are potential options in Hong Kong and Singapore. Patients are encouraged to seek consultations with orthopedic specialists in major medical centers to explore their options and receive personalized care tailored to their specific needs.
