Blisters in the ear?

On Tuesday, I experienced severe ear pain and went to see an otolaryngologist.
The doctor diagnosed me with ear inflammation, which was attributed to the recent hot weather and itching that led me to dig in my ear.
I was prescribed medication to apply and take orally.
The next morning, my ear began to swell and felt completely blocked.
Today, Thursday, I returned for a follow-up appointment, and the doctor said I developed blisters, leading to otitis media and otitis externa, so I couldn't use the topical medication.
Instead, the doctor prescribed ear drops.
Will the blisters resolve on their own, and how long will it take to heal? The blockage is very uncomfortable.

Ear blisters, or fluid-filled lesions in the ear, can be a concerning symptom, often associated with inflammation or infection. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a combination of external ear canal inflammation (otitis externa) and middle ear inflammation (otitis media), which can lead to the formation of blisters or fluid accumulation in the ear.

Causes of Ear Blisters
1. Infection: The most common cause of ear blisters is an infection, either viral or bacterial. In your case, the inflammation may have started due to external factors, such as scratching or irritation from excessive cleaning, leading to an infection.

2. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to certain substances, including soaps, shampoos, or even earrings, can cause inflammation and blistering in the ear.

3. Eczema or Dermatitis: Skin conditions like eczema can also affect the ear canal, leading to irritation and blister formation.

4. Environmental Factors: Changes in weather, such as heat and humidity, can exacerbate existing conditions or create an environment conducive to infections.

Symptoms
The symptoms you are experiencing, such as pain, a feeling of fullness or blockage, and the presence of blisters, are indicative of inflammation in the ear. The pain can be sharp or throbbing, and the blockage can lead to a sensation of pressure, which may affect hearing.

Treatment Options
1. Medications: Since your doctor has prescribed topical medications and ear drops, it's essential to follow their instructions carefully. These medications may include antibiotics if a bacterial infection is suspected or corticosteroids to reduce inflammation.

2. Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress to the affected ear can help alleviate pain and promote drainage if there is fluid buildup.

3. Avoiding Irritants: It's crucial to avoid further irritation to the ear. This includes refraining from inserting objects into the ear canal, such as cotton swabs, which can worsen the condition.

4. Hydration and Rest: Staying hydrated and getting adequate rest can support your immune system in fighting off the infection.

5. Follow-Up Care: Since your condition involves both external and middle ear issues, regular follow-up with your ENT specialist is essential. They can monitor the progress of your treatment and make adjustments as necessary.

Prognosis
In many cases, ear blisters and the associated conditions can resolve on their own, especially with appropriate treatment. The duration for recovery can vary; mild cases may improve within a few days, while more severe infections might take a week or longer to heal completely. If the blisters do not improve or worsen, further evaluation may be necessary to rule out complications.

When to Seek Further Medical Attention
If you experience worsening symptoms, such as increased pain, fever, or discharge from the ear, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of a more severe infection that may require more aggressive treatment.

In conclusion, while ear blisters can be uncomfortable and concerning, with proper care and treatment, they often resolve effectively. Be sure to adhere to your doctor's recommendations and keep them informed of any changes in your symptoms.
