Menstrual period is delayed, but pregnancy test shows negative results?
Dear Dr.
Chang: My menstrual cycle has always been regular or early.
The last time I had my period was on March 28.
I had unprotected sexual intercourse twice, with the last occurrence on May 1.
Since then, I still haven't gotten my period, but I have been experiencing breast and lower abdominal tenderness.
I took two home pregnancy tests two days apart and also went to a gynecologist for a test, all of which came back negative.
Could the breast tenderness possibly indicate pregnancy?

Hello, inquiring person: It is not possible to determine pregnancy solely based on subjective symptoms.
If you are uncertain about whether you are pregnant, it is recommended to consult a physician for examinations such as ultrasound, urine tests, or blood tests to discuss whether to observe or induce menstruation.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

Missed periods combined with negative pregnancy tests can be a perplexing situation for many women. In your case, where you have experienced a missed period since March 28 and have had two instances of unprotected intercourse, it is understandable to be concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, especially given the symptoms of breast tenderness and abdominal discomfort you are experiencing.
Firstly, it is important to note that a missed period can be caused by a variety of factors beyond pregnancy. Stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, excessive exercise, or underlying medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can all lead to irregular menstrual cycles. In your case, the breast tenderness and abdominal discomfort could also be attributed to premenstrual syndrome (PMS), which can occur even when a period is late.
Regarding the negative pregnancy tests, it is crucial to consider the timing of the tests. Home pregnancy tests (HPTs) are generally very accurate, especially when taken after a missed period. However, if the tests are taken too early, they may not detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy. If you tested before your expected period or shortly after conception, it is possible that the levels of hCG were not yet high enough to be detected. Additionally, some women may have low hCG levels due to various reasons, including ectopic pregnancies or biochemical pregnancies, where a fertilized egg does not implant properly.
In your case, since you have taken multiple tests and have also been to a gynecologist who confirmed negative results, the likelihood of pregnancy decreases. However, if your symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further testing, such as a blood test for hCG, which can detect lower levels of the hormone than urine tests, or an ultrasound to check for any abnormalities in the reproductive system.
It is also worth mentioning that breast tenderness can be influenced by hormonal fluctuations, which can occur even in the absence of pregnancy. Conditions such as fibrocystic breast changes or hormonal imbalances can lead to similar symptoms.
In conclusion, while the symptoms you are experiencing could potentially indicate pregnancy, the negative tests and the absence of a period could also be attributed to other factors. It is essential to continue monitoring your symptoms and consult with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current situation, ensuring that you receive the appropriate care and support.
