Will Bipolar Disorder Affect My Final Height at 21? - Pediatrics

Developmental issues

I was diagnosed with a condition that affects sleep, called bipolar disorder, around the age of 21.
However, it took me five years to start medication.
Will my final height be affected? I'm really worried.
Although I know that 21 is past the growth period, I always think I still have room to grow taller.

Wei, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/05/06

Dr. Zhong Ruixian reply Pediatrics

Hello Mr.
Wei: May I ask if you are 21 or 28 years old? Generally, male bone age does not change after the age of 18.
The health insurance coverage for growth hormone is also based on a bone age of under 16 years (and must meet other related diagnostic criteria).
Essentially, the chance of growing taller is quite low...
If you would like to confirm, you could check your bone age.
Wishing you good health! Changhua Hospital, Dr.

Bipolar disorder, commonly known as manic-depressive illness, is a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings that include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). While it primarily affects mood, behavior, and cognitive functions, there are concerns regarding its potential impact on physical health, including growth and development.

At the age of 21, you are indeed past the typical growth phase, which generally concludes in the late teens to early twenties. Most individuals reach their final adult height by this age, as the growth plates in the bones close after puberty. Therefore, it is unlikely that bipolar disorder itself will affect your final height. However, there are several factors to consider that could indirectly influence growth and overall health during the developmental years leading up to 21.

1. Medication Effects: If you were prescribed medications for bipolar disorder, particularly mood stabilizers or antipsychotics, some of these can have side effects that may influence weight, appetite, and metabolism. For instance, certain medications can lead to weight gain, which might affect your body image and self-esteem, but they do not typically impact height directly. It’s essential to discuss any concerns about medication side effects with your healthcare provider.

2. Nutrition and Lifestyle: Mental health conditions can affect appetite and nutrition. If bipolar disorder led to periods of depression, you might have experienced changes in eating habits that could impact your overall health. Proper nutrition is crucial during the growth years, and deficiencies can affect physical development. If you maintained a balanced diet throughout your teenage years, it’s likely that your height was not significantly impacted.

3. Sleep Patterns: Sleep disturbances are common in individuals with bipolar disorder. Chronic sleep deprivation can affect overall health and well-being, but it is less likely to affect height directly. However, good sleep hygiene is essential for mental and physical health, and ensuring adequate rest can support your overall growth and development.

4. Stress and Mental Health: Chronic stress and untreated mental health conditions can have various effects on the body, including hormonal changes that might influence growth. However, by the time you reached 21, any significant impact on height would have already occurred.

In conclusion, while bipolar disorder can affect various aspects of your life, including mental and physical health, it is unlikely to have a direct impact on your final height at 21. If you have concerns about your growth, health, or the effects of your mental health condition, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized guidance and support. They can help you understand the implications of your condition and treatment, as well as assist you in managing any concerns related to your health and well-being. Remember, focusing on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including proper nutrition, regular exercise, and good sleep hygiene, is essential for your overall health, regardless of height.
