Swollen lymph nodes, ear pain?

I would like to ask about my symptoms.
On the first day, I had a runny nose and a severe headache, but after resting, I felt better.
By the second day, I was completely fine.
However, on the third day, I started experiencing significant pain in my ear, which hurts when touched.
I also feel that my tonsils are swollen, but this is only on the right side.
What could be the cause of this?

Xiao Wei, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/05/07

More Info

Ear pain, particularly when accompanied by symptoms such as swollen tonsils and nasal congestion, can be indicative of several underlying conditions. Based on your description, it seems you experienced a progression of symptoms starting with nasal congestion and headache, followed by localized ear pain and discomfort in the tonsils, specifically on the right side.

Possible Causes
1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize pressure. When you have a cold or sinus infection, inflammation can block this tube, leading to pressure buildup in the ear, causing pain. This could explain why you feel pain when touching your ear.

2. Otitis Media: This is an infection or inflammation of the middle ear, often resulting from a cold or respiratory infection. Symptoms include ear pain, fever, and sometimes drainage from the ear. The fact that your pain is localized to one side could suggest that the right ear is affected.

3. Tonsillitis: The hardening sensation in your tonsils could indicate tonsillitis, which is inflammation of the tonsils, often due to viral or bacterial infections. This condition can cause referred pain to the ear, as the nerves in the throat and ear are closely linked.

4. Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinuses can lead to pressure and pain in the ear, particularly if the sinuses are blocked. This could also explain your initial symptoms of nasal congestion and headache.

5. Referred Pain: Sometimes, pain from one area of the body can be felt in another. For instance, issues with the teeth or jaw (such as temporomandibular joint dysfunction) can cause ear pain.

Recommendations
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given that your symptoms have progressed, it is advisable to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination to determine the exact cause of your ear pain and tonsil discomfort.

2. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. However, it is important to follow the dosage instructions on the packaging.

3. Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the affected ear may provide some relief from pain.

4. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids can help thin mucus and promote drainage, which may alleviate some pressure in the ears and sinuses.

5. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke and other irritants that can exacerbate your symptoms.

6. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms. If you experience fever, worsening pain, or any new symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.

Conclusion
In summary, your symptoms of ear pain and swollen tonsils could be due to a variety of causes, including Eustachian tube dysfunction, otitis media, or tonsillitis. It is essential to seek medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and promote a quicker recovery, especially since ear pain can significantly affect your quality of life.
