A lump at the anal opening?
I recently noticed a bump near my anus that looks like a pimple, and it hurts a lot when I wipe.
The bump is located on the left side of the anus.
I'm not sure if it's hemorrhoids or something else.
Could you please help me understand what it might be? Also, it has been secreting a discharge that resembles yellow mucus.
Thank you.

Dr. Chen Qifeng reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
It is likely hemorrhoids or anal fistula.
Please consult a colorectal surgeon.

More Info
When it comes to painful bumps near the anus, there are several potential causes that could explain your symptoms. The description of a bump resembling a pimple, along with pain during wiping and the presence of a yellowish discharge, raises a few possibilities. The most common conditions that could lead to such symptoms include hemorrhoids, anal abscesses, and skin tags.
1. Hemorrhoids: These are swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus that can cause pain, discomfort, and sometimes bleeding. External hemorrhoids can appear as lumps around the anus and may be painful, especially during bowel movements or when wiping. They can also secrete mucus, which might explain the yellowish discharge you mentioned.
2. Anal Abscess: This is a collection of pus that forms near the anus due to an infection. An abscess can cause significant pain and swelling, and it may also produce discharge that can be yellow or foul-smelling. If the abscess is not treated, it can lead to further complications, including the formation of a fistula.
3. Skin Tags: These are benign growths that can occur around the anus. They are usually painless but can become irritated and cause discomfort, especially if they are located in a position where they are frequently rubbed or wiped.
4. Fungal or Bacterial Infections: Sometimes, infections in the anal area can lead to painful bumps and discharge. These infections can be caused by various factors, including poor hygiene, moisture, or skin irritation.
5. Other Conditions: There are other less common conditions that could cause similar symptoms, such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or other dermatological issues.
Given your symptoms, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Here are some steps you can take:
- Avoid Irritation: Try to keep the area clean and dry. Avoid using harsh soaps or wipes that could irritate the skin further.
- Warm Baths: Soaking in warm water can help relieve discomfort and promote healing.
- Over-the-Counter Treatments: You may consider using over-the-counter creams or ointments designed for hemorrhoids or anal discomfort, but consult with a healthcare provider before starting any treatment.
- Seek Medical Attention: If the bump persists, worsens, or is accompanied by fever, significant pain, or bleeding, it is crucial to see a doctor. They may perform a physical examination and possibly imaging studies to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.
In summary, while hemorrhoids and anal abscesses are the most likely causes of the painful bump near your anus, only a healthcare professional can provide a definitive diagnosis. Early intervention is key to preventing complications and ensuring proper treatment.
