Effective Scar Treatment Options After a Car Accident: A Guide - Plastic Surgery

Car accident scars

I had a car accident two and a half years ago, which resulted in scars on both of my legs.
On my left knee, there is a scar measuring 2x3 cm that has some slight elevation and feels soft to the touch.
On my right leg, there are two separate scars, each approximately 3x3 cm in size, but these are flat and only consist of the scar tissue.
Would using scar cream still be effective? Previously, I used MEDERMA scar gel; are there other brands that might be more effective? If I consider laser surgery, what are the methods and approximate costs involved? Thank you.
Here are the photos of the scars: left leg scar photo http://ppt.cc/tK1VJ, right leg scar photo http://ppt.cc/3AYio.

Dr. Lu Daokuan reply Plastic Surgery

The primary functions of scar ointments are to soften and lighten scars.
For scars measuring 3x3 cm that have persisted for over two years, it is advisable to seek outpatient treatment with scar injection therapy.
If the results are unsatisfactory, further options can be considered.

Effective scar treatment options after a car accident can vary significantly based on the type, size, and age of the scar, as well as individual skin characteristics. Given your situation, where you have scars on both legs from an accident two and a half years ago, it’s essential to explore various treatment options that can help improve the appearance of these scars.

1. Topical Treatments
Topical treatments are often the first line of defense for scar management. You mentioned using Mederma, which is a popular silicone-based gel that can help improve the appearance of scars. Silicone gels and sheets are widely recommended by dermatologists because they hydrate the scar and create an optimal healing environment. Other effective topical treatments include:
- Silicone Gel Sheets: These are often more effective than creams and can be worn over the scar for extended periods.

- Vitamin E: While evidence is mixed, some people find that applying vitamin E oil can help soften and improve the appearance of scars.

- Hydrocortisone Cream: This can help reduce inflammation and itching associated with raised scars.

- Other Scar Creams: Brands like ScarAway and Kelo-cote are also popular and may provide similar benefits to Mederma.

2. Laser Treatments
If topical treatments do not yield satisfactory results, laser therapy is a more advanced option. Laser treatments can help reduce the redness and texture of scars. There are different types of laser treatments available:
- Ablative Lasers: These lasers remove the outer layers of skin and are effective for deeper scars.

- Non-Ablative Lasers: These work by stimulating collagen production without damaging the outer layer of skin, making them suitable for less severe scars.

The cost of laser treatments can vary widely based on the type of laser used, the number of sessions required, and the geographic location of the treatment center. On average, you might expect to pay anywhere from $200 to $1,500 per session, and multiple sessions may be necessary for optimal results.

3. Microneedling
Microneedling is another effective treatment for scars. This procedure involves using fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin, which stimulates collagen production and can improve the texture and appearance of scars. The cost typically ranges from $100 to $700 per session, depending on the provider and the area being treated.

4. Chemical Peels
Chemical peels can also be beneficial for scar treatment. They work by removing the outer layer of skin, which can help improve the appearance of scars. The depth of the peel can vary, and costs can range from $150 to $600 per session.

5. Surgical Options
In some cases, surgical intervention may be necessary, especially for hypertrophic or keloid scars. Surgical options can include scar revision surgery, which aims to remove the scar and minimize its appearance. The costs for surgical procedures can vary widely, often ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the surgery and the surgeon's fees.

6. Consultation with a Dermatologist
Before deciding on a treatment plan, it’s crucial to consult with a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon who specializes in scar management. They can assess your scars and recommend the most appropriate treatment options based on your specific needs and skin type.

Conclusion
In summary, there are various effective scar treatment options available after a car accident, ranging from topical treatments to advanced procedures like laser therapy and surgical options. The choice of treatment should be guided by the characteristics of the scars, your skin type, and your personal preferences. Consulting with a qualified healthcare provider will help you make an informed decision and achieve the best possible outcome for your scars.
