Delayed menstruation?

Doctor, my last menstrual period was on April 16th, and today is May 16th, and I still haven't gotten my period.
I have been using condoms during sexual intercourse.
My periods are usually quite regular.
Recently, I have been eating fried foods and cold items.
Could this have an effect? I sincerely seek your advice.

zhāngyú, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/05/16

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, based on your description, there is a possibility of pregnancy, as the failure rate of using condoms correctly throughout intercourse is still around 5%.
Generally, it is not recommended to rely solely on condoms for contraception.
The foods you mentioned do not affect the menstrual cycle.
I suggest that if your period is one week late, you should take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

Delayed menstruation can be a source of concern for many women, especially when their cycles are typically regular. In your case, with your last menstrual period starting on April 16 and now being May 16 without the onset of menstruation, it is understandable that you are seeking answers.

There are several potential causes for a delayed menstrual cycle, and it’s important to consider various factors that could contribute to this situation:
1. Pregnancy: Although you mentioned using condoms during sexual intercourse, no contraceptive method is 100% effective. If there is any possibility of contraceptive failure, it might be wise to take a home pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy as a cause of your delayed menstruation.

2. Stress: Psychological stress can significantly impact your menstrual cycle. Factors such as work pressure, personal issues, or significant life changes can lead to hormonal imbalances that may delay your period.

3. Diet and Lifestyle Changes: You mentioned consuming fried foods and ice, which could affect your overall health. While occasional indulgence in these foods is generally not a problem, a sudden change in diet or excessive consumption of unhealthy foods can lead to weight fluctuations and hormonal changes, potentially affecting your menstrual cycle.

4. Weight Fluctuations: Significant weight loss or gain can disrupt your menstrual cycle. If you have experienced any changes in your weight recently, this could be a contributing factor.

5. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other hormonal imbalances, can lead to irregularities in your menstrual cycle. If you have a history of such conditions or experience other symptoms (like excessive hair growth, acne, or weight changes), it may be worth discussing with a healthcare provider.

6. Exercise: Intense physical activity or changes in your exercise routine can also impact your menstrual cycle. If you have recently increased your level of physical activity or are involved in rigorous training, this could be a factor.

7. Age and Hormonal Changes: If you are approaching a significant age milestone (like late 30s or early 40s), it could be a sign of perimenopause, where hormonal fluctuations begin to occur.
Given that your period is delayed by a month and you have a history of regular cycles, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, blood tests to check hormone levels, and possibly an ultrasound if necessary.
In the meantime, if you are experiencing any unusual symptoms such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or any other concerning signs, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, while there are many potential causes for a delayed menstruation, it is crucial to approach the situation with a comprehensive view of your health and lifestyle. Taking a pregnancy test and consulting with a healthcare provider will help clarify the situation and provide you with the necessary guidance moving forward.
