After menstruation
Hello, after my menstrual period ends, I notice a strong odor in my genital area.
This has not happened in previous cycles, but since being diagnosed with adenomyosis earlier this year, I have experienced this strong odor starting on the first day of my period, which lasts for about 2 to 3 days.
Should I be concerned about this issue, or should I visit a clinic or hospital for an examination?

Unpleasant odor after menstruation can be a concerning symptom, especially if it is a new development for you. Given your history of endometriosis (子宮肌腺症), it is important to pay attention to any changes in your body, as they may indicate underlying issues that require medical attention.
Firstly, it's essential to understand that a certain degree of odor is normal during and after menstruation due to the breakdown of blood and tissue. However, a strong, unpleasant odor that is different from what you have experienced in the past could suggest an infection or other medical condition. Infections such as bacterial vaginosis or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can cause a fishy odor, while yeast infections may lead to a more yeasty smell. Additionally, endometriosis can sometimes lead to complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which may also present with unusual odors.
Here are some key points to consider regarding when to seek medical advice:
1. Duration and Change in Odor: If the unpleasant odor persists for more than a few days after your period ends, or if it has changed significantly in character (e.g., becoming stronger or more offensive), it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider.
2. Accompanying Symptoms: Pay attention to any other symptoms that may accompany the odor, such as unusual discharge (color, consistency), itching, burning sensations, pelvic pain, or fever. The presence of these symptoms can indicate an infection or other complications that require prompt evaluation.
3. History of Endometriosis: Since you have been diagnosed with endometriosis, it is crucial to monitor any new symptoms closely. Endometriosis can lead to various complications, including the formation of adhesions or cysts, which may contribute to changes in your menstrual cycle or vaginal health.
4. Impact on Daily Life: If the odor is affecting your quality of life or causing you distress, it is worth discussing with a healthcare professional. They can provide reassurance, conduct necessary examinations, and recommend appropriate treatments if needed.
5. Regular Check-ups: Given your medical history, maintaining regular gynecological check-ups is essential. These visits allow for monitoring of your endometriosis and any other gynecological health concerns.
In summary, while some odor after menstruation can be normal, a strong, unpleasant smell that persists or is accompanied by other symptoms warrants medical evaluation. It is always better to err on the side of caution, especially with a history of endometriosis. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a pelvic exam and laboratory tests, to determine the cause of the odor and recommend appropriate treatment. Don't hesitate to reach out to your doctor or a gynecologist for further evaluation and peace of mind.
