There is a slight raised lesion in the middle of the left side of the anterior part of the tongue?
This morning, I noticed a sensation of something rubbing against the roof of my mouth while having breakfast.
Later, I looked in the mirror and found a slightly raised area in the middle of my tongue, slightly to the left.
It doesn't hurt or itch, and it feels soft to the touch.
What could this be? Thank you, doctor.

A soft bump on the left side of your tongue can be concerning, especially if it is a new development. Based on your description, it seems that you have noticed a soft, slightly raised area on your tongue that does not cause pain or itching. This type of bump can arise from several different causes, and understanding these can help you determine the best course of action.
One common cause of a soft bump on the tongue is a mucocele, which is a fluid-filled cyst that can occur when a salivary gland duct becomes blocked. Mucoceles are typically painless and can appear as soft, translucent bumps. They often resolve on their own, but if they persist or cause discomfort, a healthcare provider may recommend removal.
Another possibility is a fibroma, which is a benign growth of connective tissue. Fibromas can develop in response to irritation or trauma, such as biting your tongue or irritation from dental appliances. These growths are usually firm and painless, but they can vary in texture and appearance.
Additionally, you might be experiencing a papilloma, which is a benign tumor that arises from the epithelial cells of the tongue. These can appear as small, soft bumps and are generally harmless. They may require monitoring or removal if they change in size or appearance.
In some cases, the bump could be related to oral thrush, a fungal infection that can cause white patches or bumps on the tongue. However, this typically presents with additional symptoms, such as soreness or a burning sensation.
Given that the bump is soft, not painful, and does not itch, it is less likely to be a serious condition. However, it is essential to monitor the bump for any changes in size, color, or associated symptoms. If it persists for more than a couple of weeks, becomes painful, or if you notice any other concerning symptoms (such as difficulty swallowing, changes in taste, or swelling), it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional, preferably an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist or a dentist.
In summary, while a soft bump on the tongue can be benign, it is crucial to keep an eye on it and seek medical advice if it does not resolve or if you have any concerns. Regular dental check-ups can also help catch any oral health issues early on. Remember, maintaining good oral hygiene and avoiding irritants can help prevent many oral conditions.
