Tonsil and throat issues?

Hello Doctor: My tonsils have been uncomfortable for about two months.
I have visited two ENT clinics because I have been coughing up tonsil stones, so I have been aware of my tonsillitis.
However, in the past two weeks, the sensation of a foreign body in my throat has become increasingly strange.
When I looked in the mirror, I noticed that one side of my tonsil is pushing out a growth that looks like a polyp towards the center.
I would like to ask if this is normal or if it is indeed a polyp, as it is starting to affect my daily life.

Si, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/05/25

More Info

Tonsil issues can be quite uncomfortable and concerning, especially when symptoms persist or worsen over time. Based on your description, it sounds like you have been experiencing symptoms related to tonsillitis, including the presence of tonsil stones and a sensation of something being stuck in your throat. The appearance of a growth or "fleshy lump" on one side of your tonsil can be alarming, and it’s important to address these symptoms appropriately.

Symptoms of Tonsil Issues
Common symptoms associated with tonsil problems include:
1. Sore Throat: This is often the first sign of tonsillitis or an infection.

2. Difficulty Swallowing: Enlarged tonsils can obstruct the throat, making swallowing painful or difficult.

3. Tonsil Stones: These are calcified debris that can accumulate in the crevices of the tonsils, leading to bad breath and discomfort.

4. Swollen Tonsils: Inflammation can cause the tonsils to appear larger than normal.

5. Foul Breath: Often associated with tonsil stones or infections.

6. Ear Pain: Referred pain from the throat can lead to discomfort in the ears.

7. Fever: This may accompany an infection.

Potential Causes
The symptoms you describe could be due to several conditions:
- Chronic Tonsillitis: Recurrent inflammation of the tonsils can lead to persistent symptoms and complications.

- Tonsil Stones (Tonsilloliths): These can cause discomfort and may lead to infections if not managed.

- Tonsillar Hypertrophy: Enlarged tonsils can obstruct the airway and cause difficulty swallowing.

- Tonsillar Neoplasm: While less common, growths on the tonsils can be benign or malignant, necessitating further evaluation.

Treatment Options
1. Conservative Management: If the symptoms are mild, treatment may include:
- Saltwater Gargles: This can help soothe a sore throat and reduce inflammation.

- Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help alleviate discomfort.

- Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers: Medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and fever.

2. Medical Treatment: If symptoms persist or worsen, a healthcare provider may recommend:
- Antibiotics: If a bacterial infection is suspected, antibiotics may be necessary.

- Corticosteroids: These can reduce inflammation in severe cases.

3. Surgical Options: If you experience recurrent tonsillitis or significant obstruction, a tonsillectomy (surgical removal of the tonsils) may be considered. This is often recommended for individuals who have frequent infections or significant discomfort affecting their quality of life.

When to Seek Further Evaluation
Given that you have noticed a "fleshy lump" on your tonsil that is affecting your daily life, it is crucial to seek further evaluation from an ENT specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies or a biopsy if necessary, to determine the nature of the growth and recommend appropriate treatment.

Conclusion
In summary, while many tonsil issues can be managed conservatively, the presence of a new growth or significant changes in your symptoms warrants further investigation. Early intervention can help prevent complications and improve your quality of life. Be sure to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about all your symptoms and concerns, as this will aid in reaching an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plan.
