Photopsia
Hello, doctor.
About a week ago, I went to the hospital for an eye examination, and the doctor arranged for a 3D fundus photography.
I was informed that the structure of my fundus is normal.
However, in the past couple of nights, I suddenly noticed flashes of light in the upper part of my right eye near the nose (which only last for a short time).
I'm a bit worried that this might indicate a problem with my retina.

If you are experiencing flashes and floaters, it is advisable to undergo a comprehensive dilated eye examination.

Flashing lights in your vision can indeed be concerning, especially when they occur suddenly or in a specific area of your visual field. Based on your description and the previous discussions, it’s important to understand the potential causes and implications of these symptoms.
Firstly, the phenomenon of seeing flashes of light, particularly in the peripheral vision, can be attributed to several factors. One common cause is related to the vitreous gel inside the eye. As we age, the vitreous can become more liquid and may pull away from the retina, leading to what is known as "posterior vitreous detachment." This detachment can cause flashes of light, often described as "lightning streaks" or "flashes." These flashes are typically harmless, but they can sometimes indicate more serious conditions, such as retinal tears or detachment.
In your case, since you recently underwent a thorough examination, including 3D retinal imaging that showed no abnormalities, it is reassuring. However, the sudden onset of flashes, especially localized to a specific area like near the nose, warrants further attention. While it may not indicate a serious issue, it is crucial to monitor the situation closely. If the flashes persist, increase in frequency, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as a sudden increase in floaters, a shadow or curtain over your vision, or a significant decrease in vision, you should seek immediate medical attention.
Another aspect to consider is the possibility of "photopsia," which refers to the perception of light without an external light source. This can occur due to various reasons, including migraines, retinal issues, or even neurological conditions. If you have a history of migraines, this could be a potential explanation for your symptoms.
Regarding your concern about retinal issues, it is essential to understand that while the presence of flashes can sometimes be a sign of retinal problems, it is not always the case. The fact that your recent examination showed a healthy retina is a positive sign. However, if you experience any changes in your vision or the nature of the flashes changes, it would be prudent to follow up with your eye care provider for a re-evaluation.
In terms of management, if the flashes are determined to be benign and related to vitreous changes, there may not be a specific treatment required. However, maintaining regular eye examinations is crucial, especially if you have risk factors such as high myopia (nearsightedness), which can increase the likelihood of retinal issues.
In conclusion, while flashing lights in your vision can be alarming, they are not always indicative of a serious problem, especially given your recent normal eye examination. However, vigilance is key. Keep track of any changes in your symptoms and do not hesitate to seek further evaluation if necessary. Regular check-ups with your eye care professional will help ensure that any potential issues are caught early, allowing for timely intervention if needed.
