The effects of X-rays on fertilized eggs?

Hello, my husband and I are planning for pregnancy, so I have been measuring my basal body temperature for several months.
I expect my next ovulation day to be September 20th.
However, on the same day, September 20th, I have an appointment for a chest X-ray.
In this situation, if I become pregnant: 1.
Will this X-ray affect the fetus? 2.
Will this X-ray have any impact on the egg or fertilized egg? 3.
Should I avoid pregnancy this month and consider trying to conceive next month instead?

Xiao Jun, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2002/09/13

During a bad pregnancy, it is certainly advisable to avoid X-rays as much as possible.
However, the radiation dose from a chest X-ray is quite low and should not pose a problem for the egg, as fertilization has not yet occurred and the egg has not begun to divide.
Nevertheless, you can still request the radiologic technologist to cover your abdomen with a lead apron for added safety.

When considering the impact of X-rays on fertility and early pregnancy, it is essential to understand the potential risks associated with radiation exposure, especially during the critical early stages of gestation. Here’s a comprehensive overview based on your concerns:
1. Impact of X-rays on the Fetus: X-rays emit ionizing radiation, which can potentially harm developing cells. The most significant risk occurs during the first trimester, particularly in the first few weeks after conception when the embryo is rapidly dividing and developing. Studies suggest that exposure to high doses of radiation (generally above 5-10 rads) can increase the risk of miscarriage, congenital malformations, and developmental issues. However, a single chest X-ray typically delivers a very low dose of radiation (approximately 0.1 mSv), which is considered minimal and unlikely to cause harm to a developing fetus.
2. Effect on Eggs and Fertilization: The radiation from a chest X-ray is primarily directed at the thoracic region and does not significantly affect the ovaries or the eggs. The primary concern regarding fertility is not the X-ray itself but rather other factors such as age, lifestyle, and underlying health conditions. The consensus among medical professionals is that the radiation exposure from a single chest X-ray is not sufficient to impact egg quality or the fertilization process.

3. Timing of Pregnancy: If you are planning to conceive and have a scheduled chest X-ray on your estimated ovulation day (September 20), it is advisable to weigh the risks and benefits. Given the low radiation dose from a chest X-ray, it is generally considered safe to proceed with your plans to conceive. However, if you have concerns about the timing or potential risks, you might choose to postpone conception until after the X-ray. This decision can provide peace of mind, knowing that you are taking every precaution for your future pregnancy.

4. Recommendations: If you are still uncertain, consider discussing your specific situation with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and the necessity of the X-ray. If the X-ray is essential for diagnosing a health issue, it may be worth proceeding, as untreated health conditions can pose a greater risk to both you and a potential pregnancy.

In summary, while there are valid concerns regarding radiation exposure during early pregnancy, the risk associated with a single chest X-ray is minimal. It is unlikely to affect your fertility or the health of a potential fetus. However, if you feel more comfortable waiting until after the X-ray to try for pregnancy, that is a reasonable choice. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare provider to ensure that you make informed decisions regarding your reproductive health.
