Recently, I have been noticing small black spots on my lips?

Recently, I have been noticing small black (blood?) spots on my lips, as shown in the image (sorry for the blur) http://i.imgur.com/t51S7Tr.jpg.
They appear one at a time in different locations.
Over the past 2 to 3 weeks, they have occurred three times.
They are not painful or itchy.
Usually, after I notice them, I tend to squeeze or pinch them, and they disappear within a few hours; I'm not sure if they vanish or fall off.
Although they do not significantly affect my daily life and are quite small, I would still like to seek a professional doctor's opinion.
Thank you.

Medical regulations stipulate that "a physician may not administer treatment or prescribe medication without personally examining the patient," and therefore, online diagnosis is also not permitted.

Small black spots on the lips can be concerning, especially when they appear suddenly and without pain or itching. These spots may be caused by a variety of factors, and understanding their potential origins can help in determining the appropriate treatment or management strategies.

Possible Causes of Small Black Spots on the Lips
1. Petechiae: These are tiny, pinpoint red or purple spots that can appear on the skin or mucous membranes, including the lips. They occur due to minor bleeding under the skin, often from small blood vessels breaking. While they can be harmless, persistent or widespread petechiae may require medical evaluation.

2. Melanosis: This is a condition characterized by the deposition of melanin in the skin, which can lead to dark spots. Melanosis can be caused by sun exposure, smoking, or certain medications. If the spots are related to sun exposure, using a lip balm with SPF can help prevent further discoloration.

3. Hyperpigmentation: This refers to areas of skin that become darker than the surrounding skin. It can be caused by various factors, including hormonal changes, certain medications, or trauma to the area (like biting or irritation).

4. Seborrheic Keratosis: Although more common on other parts of the body, these benign growths can sometimes appear on the lips. They are usually brown or black and have a waxy, scaly appearance.

5. Moles or Nevi: These are common skin growths that can appear anywhere on the body, including the lips. They can be brown, black, or even skin-colored. If a mole changes in size, shape, or color, or if it becomes painful, it should be evaluated by a dermatologist.

6. Infection: Certain viral infections, such as herpes simplex virus, can cause lesions on the lips. However, these typically present with pain, itching, or blistering, which does not seem to be the case in your situation.

Treatment Options
1. Observation: If the spots are not causing any discomfort and are not changing in appearance, it may be reasonable to monitor them. Many benign conditions do not require treatment.

2. Topical Treatments: If the spots are due to hyperpigmentation or melanosis, topical treatments such as hydroquinone, retinoids, or vitamin C serums may help lighten the spots over time. Always consult with a dermatologist before starting any new treatment.

3. Laser Therapy: For persistent or bothersome spots, laser treatments can be effective in reducing pigmentation. This option should be discussed with a qualified dermatologist.

4. Biopsy: If there is any concern about the nature of the spots, a dermatologist may recommend a biopsy to rule out any serious conditions.

5. Prevention: Protecting your lips from sun exposure with SPF lip balm and avoiding irritants (like certain cosmetics or harsh weather) can help prevent new spots from forming.

When to Seek Medical Attention
While many small black spots on the lips are benign, you should seek medical advice if:
- The spots change in size, shape, or color.

- New spots continue to appear frequently.

- You experience any pain, itching, or other symptoms.

- You have a family history of skin cancer or other skin conditions.

In conclusion, while small black spots on the lips can be concerning, they are often harmless. Monitoring their appearance and consulting with a dermatologist for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan is advisable, especially if the spots persist or change.
