Emergency contraceptive pills, red discharge?
Hello Doctor, I have been taking oral contraceptives (28 pills) for the fourth month.
Yesterday, I took the 16th pill of the fourth pack, and during intercourse last night, I noticed some reddish-brown flaky discharge.
My period is not due for another week, and I have not missed any doses.
Can you tell me if I am still protected against pregnancy? Why is this discharge reddish? Thank you.

What you need is not medical advice but rather a refresher on sexual health knowledge.
For such inquiries, it is recommended to refer to the National Health Administration's "Sexual Well-being e-Learning" or the Obstetrics and Gynecology Society's "Consultation Guide for Adolescent Contraception" at http://goo.gl/dc6PfW.
Hello, regarding your question: If you experience menstruation or breakthrough bleeding while taking birth control pills, there is no need to stop taking them; continue to take them as scheduled.
Once your body adjusts to the birth control pills, the abnormal bleeding should cease.
However, if irregular bleeding persists for more than three months or if you experience heavy bleeding, you should consult a physician for advice.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.
Zhang.

When it comes to experiencing brownish discharge while on birth control pills, it's important to understand that this can be a common occurrence and may not necessarily indicate a problem. Birth control pills work primarily by regulating hormones to prevent ovulation, and they can also affect the lining of the uterus. Here’s a detailed explanation of what you might be experiencing.
Firstly, the brownish discharge you noticed could be old blood that is being expelled from your body. This can happen for a variety of reasons, including hormonal fluctuations that are common when starting or continuing with birth control pills. Since you are in the fourth month of taking the pills, your body may still be adjusting to the hormonal changes. It’s not unusual for some women to experience spotting or breakthrough bleeding, especially during the first few months of starting a new contraceptive method.
The fact that you are experiencing this discharge a week before your expected period is also significant. It could be a sign of breakthrough bleeding, which is light bleeding that occurs between periods. This is generally not a cause for concern, especially if you have been consistent in taking your pills without missing any doses. However, if the spotting continues or becomes heavier, it may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider.
Regarding your concern about the effectiveness of the birth control pills, if you have taken your pills as directed without missing any doses, you should still be protected against pregnancy. Birth control pills are designed to be over 99% effective when taken correctly. However, factors such as certain medications, gastrointestinal issues (like vomiting or diarrhea), or not taking the pills at the same time each day can potentially reduce their effectiveness. If you have adhered to the regimen, the likelihood of pregnancy remains low.
The red color of the discharge could be due to a few reasons. It might be fresh blood mixed with cervical mucus, which can appear brownish as it oxidizes. This can happen during ovulation or as the uterine lining sheds slightly due to hormonal changes. If the discharge has a foul odor, is accompanied by severe pain, or if you have other concerning symptoms, it would be advisable to seek medical attention, as these could be signs of an infection or other medical issues.
In summary, while brownish discharge can be alarming, it is often a normal side effect of hormonal birth control. As long as you have taken your pills consistently, you should be protected against pregnancy. However, if you have any ongoing concerns or if the discharge changes in nature, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance. They can provide further evaluation and determine if any additional steps are necessary to ensure your reproductive health.
