Claforan injection
Hello, I was diagnosed with gonorrhea on June 13 and received a single injection of Claforan, which cost 700 NTD.
Is this medication effective? When can I expect the discharge to stop? I had unprotected intercourse with my partner on the 1st; will they develop proctitis and need to seek medical attention?
Chris, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/06/13
Dr. Liu Mingyue reply Urology
Hello Chris: The diagnosis of gonorrhea typically requires bacterial culture in addition to the history of symptoms.
Generally, bacterial urethritis also presents with discharge.
Claforan is a third-generation cephalosporin that is effective for urethritis.
Discharge usually decreases gradually; however, if there is still discharge or dysuria after one week, a follow-up appointment is necessary for reevaluation.
If sexual partners are asymptomatic, they usually do not need to seek medical attention.

More Info
Claforan, known generically as cefotaxime, is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that is commonly used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, including gonorrhea. The effectiveness of Claforan for treating gonorrhea is generally well-established, especially when used in conjunction with other antibiotics, such as azithromycin, to combat potential resistance. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) currently recommends dual therapy for gonorrhea, typically involving ceftriaxone (another cephalosporin) and azithromycin, due to increasing resistance patterns observed in Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacteria responsible for gonorrhea.
Regarding your specific case, receiving a single injection of Claforan may be effective, but it is essential to follow up with your healthcare provider to ensure that the treatment is adequate. The duration for which symptoms persist can vary from person to person. In many cases, symptoms may begin to resolve within a few days after treatment, but it is crucial to complete any prescribed course of antibiotics and attend follow-up appointments to confirm that the infection has cleared.
As for your concern about your partner potentially developing rectal gonorrhea, it is indeed possible for gonorrhea to infect the rectum, especially if there was unprotected anal intercourse. Symptoms of rectal gonorrhea can include discharge, pain, and discomfort, but some individuals may be asymptomatic. If your partner experiences any symptoms or has concerns, it is advisable for them to seek medical attention for evaluation and possible testing.
In summary, Claforan can be effective for treating gonorrhea, but it is important to ensure that the treatment aligns with current guidelines, which often recommend combination therapy. If symptoms persist or worsen, or if there are any concerns about potential complications, both you and your partner should consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and management. Regular follow-ups and open communication with your healthcare provider are key to ensuring a successful recovery and preventing further transmission.
