Abnormal bleeding
Hello Doctor: My menstrual cycle is irregular.
For the past few months, my period has come every one and a half months.
My last period started on April 6, and after taking Chinese medicine to induce menstruation, my period finally came on May 29, but the flow was very light, and the color was dark, leaning towards black, brown, or dark red.
After this period ended, on June 14 and 15, I noticed a small amount of brown discharge when wiping with toilet paper.
What could be the reason for the persistent small amount of brown discharge? In January of this year, I had blood tests and an abdominal ultrasound, and the doctor said there were no signs of polycystic ovary syndrome, and my uterus and ovaries appeared normal, but the endometrium was thin.
Since I have not had sexual intercourse, do I need to undergo a pelvic exam, vaginal ultrasound, or tests for the endometrium and cervix? I am very worried about my ability to have children in the future...

Hello, your menstrual cycle is irregular.
It is recommended to go to the hospital for a blood test to check hormone levels.
This may be due to poor ovulatory function, which is causing the irregular menstrual cycle.
If you have not had sexual intercourse, there is no need for a pelvic examination or vaginal ultrasound.
Wishing you good health.

Irregular menstrual bleeding can be a source of concern for many women, and understanding its potential causes is crucial for addressing any underlying issues. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing irregular menstrual cycles, with periods occurring every one and a half months, and the recent menstrual flow being minimal and dark in color.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that menstrual irregularities can stem from a variety of factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, weight fluctuations, and underlying medical conditions. In your case, the use of traditional Chinese medicine to induce menstruation may have influenced your cycle. The dark color of menstrual blood, often described as brown or dark red, typically indicates older blood that has taken longer to exit the uterus. This can be normal, especially if the flow is light.
Given that you have had blood tests and an abdominal ultrasound earlier this year, which reportedly showed no signs of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and normal ovarian and uterine structures, it is reassuring. However, the finding of a thin endometrial lining could be significant. A thin endometrial lining may affect your menstrual flow and could potentially impact fertility, as a thicker lining is generally more conducive to implantation if you were to conceive.
Regarding your concerns about the small amount of coffee-colored discharge you observed after your period, this could be residual blood from your last menstrual cycle or a sign of hormonal fluctuations. It is not uncommon for women to experience spotting or light bleeding between periods, especially if there are changes in hormonal levels. However, if this spotting persists or is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, significant changes in your cycle, or if you have concerns about fertility, it would be prudent to seek further evaluation.
As for whether you need to undergo additional examinations such as a pelvic exam, transvaginal ultrasound, or tests for the endometrium and cervix, it largely depends on your symptoms and the clinical judgment of your healthcare provider. If you are experiencing persistent irregularities, it may be beneficial to have a thorough evaluation to rule out conditions such as endometriosis, uterine fibroids, or other hormonal disorders.
In terms of fertility concerns, while irregular cycles can sometimes indicate underlying issues that may affect fertility, many women with irregular periods can still conceive. If you are planning to become pregnant in the future, it may be helpful to track your menstrual cycles and any symptoms you experience. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider in assessing your reproductive health.
In summary, while your symptoms may not immediately indicate a serious problem, ongoing monitoring and communication with your healthcare provider are essential. If you continue to experience irregularities or have concerns about your menstrual health or fertility, do not hesitate to seek further evaluation. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and addressing these issues early can lead to better outcomes in the long run.
