Sharp pain in the right side of the back, under the armpit, and in the front chest?

I have been experiencing a pulling pain on the right side of my back, under my armpit, and in my chest for the past 6 to 7 days.
I'm not sure if this sensation can be classified as pain.
Sometimes it feels tolerable, but at other times, it is consistently uncomfortable.
I haven't noticed any swelling or lumps upon touching the area, but there is a small scratch near my armpit that has been broken open.
I'm unsure if this is related to the scratch.
I plan to seek medical attention soon, but I'm not sure which specialty to consult.
Thank you.

When experiencing pain in the right side of the chest and back, especially if it has persisted for several days, it is essential to seek medical attention. The symptoms you describe—sharp pain near the armpit and chest that varies in intensity—could be indicative of several underlying conditions, some of which may require prompt evaluation and treatment.

Given that you have a small scratch near the armpit, it is worth considering whether this could be related to your symptoms. Skin injuries can sometimes lead to localized infections, which may cause pain and discomfort in the surrounding areas. If the scratch has become red, swollen, or warm to the touch, it could suggest an infection that may need treatment with antibiotics.

However, there are other potential causes for your symptoms that should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. These include:
1. Musculoskeletal Issues: Pain in the chest and back can often be attributed to muscle strain or injury, especially if you have engaged in activities that involve heavy lifting or unusual physical exertion. Conditions such as costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum) can also cause similar pain.

2. Nerve Compression or Irritation: Conditions such as a herniated disc in the cervical or thoracic spine can lead to nerve compression, resulting in pain that radiates to the chest and back. This is particularly relevant if you have a history of back issues.

3. Pulmonary Issues: Pain in the chest area can sometimes be related to lung conditions, such as pleuritis (inflammation of the lining of the lungs) or even a pulmonary embolism, which is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing up blood, or severe chest pain should prompt you to seek emergency care.

4. Cardiac Concerns: Although less common in younger individuals, chest pain can sometimes be related to heart issues. If you experience additional symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, or radiating pain to the arm or jaw, it is crucial to seek emergency medical attention.

Given the variety of potential causes, it is advisable to start by visiting a primary care physician or an urgent care clinic. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly imaging studies (like X-rays or an MRI) if deemed necessary. Depending on the findings, they may refer you to a specialist, such as an orthopedic surgeon, neurologist, or pulmonologist, for further evaluation and treatment.

In summary, while your symptoms may be related to a minor issue, the persistence and nature of the pain warrant a medical evaluation to rule out more serious conditions. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to chest and back pain, especially if it has been ongoing for several days.
