Is it possible to be pregnant?

Hello doctor, my last menstrual period started on April 8.
I had intercourse on April 19, 21, and 22.
After that, I went to the hospital for a pregnancy test on May 17, which came back negative.
By the end of May, I started experiencing symptoms that felt like pregnancy, such as nausea, frequent urination, fatigue, breast tenderness, sensitivity, increased hunger, increased vaginal discharge (but no color), and abdominal bloating.
My period still hadn’t arrived by June 8.
I went to the hospital for an examination on June 17, and the doctor performed an ultrasound and said there was nothing there, and the urine test also indicated I was not pregnant.
Doctor, is it possible that I could still be pregnant?

Xiangyu, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/06/16

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, the urine test shows no pregnancy, and the chances of being pregnant are low.
It is recommended to see a gynecologist for menstrual induction medication.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

Based on the information you've provided, it seems you are experiencing a range of symptoms that could be indicative of pregnancy, but your recent tests have not confirmed this. Let's break down your situation and provide some clarity.

1. Understanding Pregnancy Symptoms: The symptoms you mentioned—nausea, frequent urination, breast tenderness, fatigue, increased appetite, and changes in vaginal discharge—are indeed common early signs of pregnancy. However, these symptoms can also be attributed to other factors, such as hormonal changes, stress, or even premenstrual syndrome (PMS). It's important to note that not all women experience the same symptoms, and some may not experience any at all.

2. Timing of Tests: You mentioned that you had unprotected intercourse on April 19, 21, and 22, and then had a pregnancy test on May 17, which was negative. The timing of your test is crucial. Generally, it is recommended to wait at least one week after a missed period to take a home pregnancy test for the most accurate results. Since your last menstrual period started on April 8, if your cycle is regular, you would expect your next period around May 8. Testing on May 17 may have been too early, especially if implantation had not yet occurred.

3. Ultrasound and Urine Tests: You mentioned that on June 17, an ultrasound showed no signs of pregnancy, and a urine test also returned negative. An ultrasound is a reliable method to confirm pregnancy, especially if it is performed after the expected date of your period. If the ultrasound did not show any signs of a gestational sac, it is unlikely that you are pregnant at this time.

4. Possible Reasons for Symptoms: Given that your tests have been negative, the symptoms you are experiencing could be due to other reasons. Hormonal imbalances, stress, changes in diet or lifestyle, or even conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can lead to similar symptoms. Additionally, some women experience what is known as a "phantom pregnancy," where they exhibit signs of pregnancy without actually being pregnant.

5. Next Steps: Since you are still experiencing symptoms and your menstrual cycle has not resumed, it would be advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further testing, such as blood tests to measure hCG levels, which can provide more definitive answers regarding pregnancy. If pregnancy is ruled out, your doctor can help investigate other potential causes for your symptoms.

6. Emotional Considerations: It’s also important to acknowledge the emotional aspect of trying to conceive. The uncertainty and anxiety surrounding potential pregnancy can be overwhelming. If you find yourself feeling stressed or anxious, consider discussing these feelings with your healthcare provider or a counselor who specializes in reproductive health.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may suggest pregnancy, the negative tests and ultrasound findings indicate otherwise. It’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and to discuss your ongoing symptoms. They can provide you with the best guidance tailored to your specific situation.
