Issues related to the glans and foreskin?

I would like to ask the doctor about post-circumcision care.
After the surgery, I noticed that the glans and the softer skin area often feel sticky.
After showering and letting it air dry, it feels fine, but after a while, it becomes sticky again.
Is this normal? Additionally, there are small bumps at the suture site that sometimes sting when touched, and they seem to be particularly sensitive.
Will this sensitivity gradually decrease over time?
After masturbation, I feel some pain when touching the skin, but during the act, if it feels too dry, I use lubricant.
Will I gradually adapt to this? Currently, I use body wash to clean the area while showering and rinse it thoroughly with water.
Initially, everything seemed fine, but in the past couple of days, I've experienced some stinging at the urethral opening.
Should I avoid washing the urethral area, or is it sufficient to wash the entire area with water? Thank you!

Dr. Chen Jiansheng reply Urology

Hello, sir: It is unclear what you mean by "sticky"; this condition can only be assessed in person.
After circumcision, the sensory nerves will gradually adapt, which may take 1 to 2 months.
The circumcision procedure is unrelated to the pain at the urethral opening.
If the symptoms persist, you should seek medical attention to rule out the possibility of infection.

Post-circumcision care is crucial for ensuring proper healing and minimizing discomfort. After the procedure, it is common for patients to have concerns regarding sensitivity, hygiene, and overall recovery. Here’s a comprehensive overview addressing your concerns and providing guidance on post-circumcision care.

Common Concerns After Circumcision
1. Sensitivity of the Glans: After circumcision, the glans (the head of the penis) is exposed and can be more sensitive than before. This sensitivity may cause discomfort, especially during activities such as masturbation or sexual intercourse. Over time, many men find that the sensitivity decreases as the skin becomes accustomed to being exposed. However, if the sensitivity is causing significant pain or discomfort, it’s advisable to consult with your healthcare provider.

2. Adhesions and Stickiness: It’s not uncommon for the glans to feel sticky or adhere to the surrounding skin, especially if there is any residual moisture or secretions. After bathing, allowing the area to air dry is beneficial. If you notice that the stickiness persists, it may be helpful to gently clean the area with warm water and mild soap, ensuring that you rinse thoroughly. Avoid using harsh soaps or products that may irritate the sensitive skin.

3. Sutures and Pain: The presence of small bumps or sensitivity around the sutured area is typical as the body heals. These sutures are usually absorbable and will dissolve over time. If you experience sharp pain or if the area appears inflamed, it’s important to follow up with your doctor to rule out any complications such as infection.

4. Lubrication During Masturbation: Using lubrication during masturbation is a good practice, especially if you are experiencing dryness or discomfort. It’s essential to find a lubricant that works for you, as this can help reduce friction and enhance comfort. Over time, as the skin adjusts, you may find that you require less lubrication.

5. Hygiene Practices: Maintaining proper hygiene is vital. It’s generally recommended to clean the area gently with warm water and a mild, unscented soap. After washing, ensure that you rinse thoroughly to remove any soap residue. If you are experiencing pain at the urethral opening, it may be wise to avoid direct contact with soap in that area until the sensitivity subsides. Instead, focus on cleaning the surrounding areas and allow water to flow over the urethra without direct scrubbing.

Recommendations for Post-Circumcision Care
- Gentle Cleaning: Use warm water and mild soap to clean the area. Rinse thoroughly to avoid irritation.

- Drying: After bathing, allow the area to air dry completely. Avoid using towels that may cause friction.

- Monitor Sensitivity: If sensitivity persists or worsens, consult your healthcare provider for advice.

- Avoid Irritants: Steer clear of scented soaps, lotions, or other products that may irritate the sensitive skin.

- Follow-Up: If you notice any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge), or if pain persists, seek medical attention promptly.

Conclusion
Post-circumcision care is essential for a smooth recovery. While some sensitivity and discomfort are normal, it’s important to monitor your symptoms and maintain good hygiene practices. If you have ongoing concerns or if any symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and treatment options. Remember, each individual's healing process is unique, and your doctor can provide the best guidance tailored to your specific situation.
