Swelling in the left axilla?

I have been feeling swelling in my left armpit for over a year.
There are no visible tumors, and I can't feel anything unusual, but it just feels swollen.
I previously had a breast ultrasound, and the doctor said it was just a fibrocystic breast condition.
However, I still feel swelling in my armpit, and when I wear a bra, it feels tight on the left side.
Recently, my left arm has felt a bit sore and weak.
I'm concerned about what this might mean.

Understanding the symptoms you're experiencing, particularly the swelling in your left armpit and the associated sensations in your left arm, is crucial for determining the underlying causes and potential concerns. Given that you've been feeling this swelling for over a year without any identifiable tumors or lumps, it’s essential to consider various possibilities that could explain your symptoms.

Firstly, the sensation of swelling in the left armpit could be related to several benign conditions. One common cause is lymphadenopathy, which refers to the enlargement of lymph nodes. This can occur due to infections, inflammation, or even benign conditions like fibrocystic breast changes, which you've already been diagnosed with. The breast tissue can sometimes cause discomfort or a feeling of fullness in the surrounding areas, including the armpit.

Another possibility is that the swelling and discomfort could be related to musculoskeletal issues. Given that you mentioned feeling "tight" when wearing a bra, this could indicate muscle tension or strain in the surrounding muscles, which can lead to discomfort and a sensation of swelling. Poor posture, especially if you spend long hours sitting or leaning forward, can contribute to muscle tightness and discomfort in the upper body, including the chest and armpit areas.

Additionally, the sensation of weakness or "heaviness" in your left arm could be a sign of nerve compression or irritation. Conditions such as thoracic outlet syndrome, where nerves or blood vessels are compressed in the space between your collarbone and first rib, can lead to symptoms in the arm, including weakness, tingling, or discomfort. This is particularly relevant if you have a history of poor posture or repetitive strain from activities that involve the upper body.

It's also important to consider the possibility of anxiety or stress contributing to your symptoms. Chronic stress can lead to muscle tension and discomfort, which may exacerbate the sensations you're experiencing.
Given your history of breast fibrocystic changes and the ongoing nature of your symptoms, it would be prudent to follow up with a healthcare provider. They may recommend further imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or MRI, to evaluate the soft tissues in the area more thoroughly. Additionally, they might consider referring you to a specialist, such as a physical therapist, who can assess your posture and muscle function, providing exercises or treatments to alleviate tension and discomfort.

In summary, while your symptoms may not immediately suggest a serious condition, they warrant further investigation to rule out any underlying issues. It’s essential to communicate all your symptoms clearly to your healthcare provider, including the duration, intensity, and any factors that seem to exacerbate or relieve your discomfort. This comprehensive approach will help ensure that you receive the appropriate care and management for your symptoms.
