Sore throat?
Hello, I have been experiencing discomfort in my throat for almost two months.
When I swallow saliva or food, I feel a scraping or clicking sensation.
I had a CT scan, and the doctor informed me that there are no issues and that the structures are all okay.
I was prescribed anti-inflammatory medication, but I still continue to have this sensation.
I would like to ask if this could be chronic pharyngitis? Generally, how long does it take to recover? Thank you.
Hill, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/06/22
Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, if there are no structural issues, the most common condition is still chronic pharyngitis.
It is recommended to avoid foods that can trigger acid reflux, such as coffee, tea, and desserts, as well as to refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol.
Improvement may take several weeks to a few months.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Chronic throat discomfort can be a frustrating and concerning issue, especially when it persists for an extended period, as you have experienced for nearly two months. Based on your description of symptoms, including a scraping or clicking sensation when swallowing, it is possible that you may be dealing with chronic pharyngitis or another underlying condition that affects the throat.
Chronic pharyngitis is characterized by inflammation of the pharynx, which can result from various factors, including persistent irritation from allergens, smoking, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or even post-nasal drip from sinus issues. Given that your CT scan showed no structural abnormalities, it is essential to consider these other potential causes.
The duration of recovery from chronic throat discomfort can vary significantly depending on the underlying cause. If the discomfort is due to chronic pharyngitis, recovery may take several weeks to months, especially if the irritants or underlying conditions are not addressed. For example, if GERD is contributing to your symptoms, managing acid reflux through dietary changes and medications may be necessary for improvement.
In cases where allergies or irritants are involved, identifying and avoiding these triggers can lead to significant relief. Additionally, maintaining good hydration, using throat lozenges, and humidifying the air can help soothe throat discomfort.
If you have already been prescribed anti-inflammatory medications without significant improvement, it may be beneficial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may consider additional treatments, such as antihistamines for allergies, proton pump inhibitors for GERD, or even a referral to an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist for further evaluation.
It is also worth noting that chronic throat discomfort can sometimes be associated with psychological factors, such as anxiety or stress, which can exacerbate physical symptoms. In such cases, addressing mental health through counseling or therapy may also be beneficial.
In summary, while chronic throat discomfort can be distressing, understanding the potential causes and treatment options is crucial for recovery. The timeline for improvement can vary, but with appropriate management and lifestyle adjustments, many individuals find relief from their symptoms. If your discomfort persists or worsens, seeking further evaluation and treatment from a healthcare professional is essential to ensure that any underlying issues are adequately addressed.
