Frequent phlegm in the throat?
I have nasal allergies and had sinusitis when I was younger.
Ever since then, I experience phlegm stuck in my throat for about half an hour to an hour after meals.
This issue has been bothering me for a long time, but I haven't sought treatment at a hospital or clinic.
Could this be related to my previous sinusitis or caused by my allergies?

Dr. Lin Jiafang reply Family Medicine
Chronic sinusitis and allergies could both lead to the symptoms you described, but there are other potential causes as well, such as gastroesophageal reflux, chronic bronchitis, or chronic laryngitis.
It is advisable to visit a family medicine or otolaryngology specialist to determine the underlying cause.

Phlegm in the throat can be a frustrating and uncomfortable symptom, often linked to various underlying conditions, including allergies and sinusitis. Given your history of nasal allergies and childhood sinusitis, it's quite possible that these factors are contributing to your current symptoms.
When you experience nasal allergies, your body reacts to allergens (such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander) by producing excess mucus. This mucus can drip down the back of your throat, a phenomenon known as post-nasal drip. This can lead to a sensation of phlegm or mucus accumulation in the throat, which can be particularly bothersome after meals, as the act of eating can stimulate the production of mucus.
Additionally, your history of sinusitis is relevant. Sinusitis, which is the inflammation of the sinuses, can lead to increased mucus production and blockage of the sinus passages. Even if you had sinusitis in childhood, it may have predisposed you to ongoing issues with mucus production or sensitivity in your nasal passages. Chronic sinusitis can lead to persistent post-nasal drip, which can cause a sensation of phlegm in the throat.
It’s also important to consider that certain foods can exacerbate mucus production or trigger allergic reactions, leading to increased phlegm. Dairy products, for example, are often cited as potential culprits for some individuals, although this varies from person to person. If you notice that your symptoms worsen after consuming specific foods, it may be worth discussing with a healthcare provider.
In terms of treatment, addressing the underlying allergies is crucial. Antihistamines can help reduce the allergic response and decrease mucus production. Nasal corticosteroids are also effective in reducing inflammation in the nasal passages, which can help alleviate post-nasal drip. Saline nasal sprays or rinses can help clear mucus and allergens from the nasal passages, providing relief from symptoms.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, it would be advisable to consult with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist or an allergist. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include allergy testing or imaging studies to assess your sinuses. This will help determine the best course of action for managing your symptoms effectively.
In summary, your experience of phlegm in the throat is likely related to your history of nasal allergies and sinusitis. Addressing these underlying issues through appropriate medical treatment can significantly improve your symptoms and enhance your quality of life.
