Menstrual period has not arrived?

Hello Doctor: My menstrual period last month was from May 11 to May 15.
Then, around the 20th of May, I experienced hematuria.
I visited the doctor on May 31, and the doctor said I did not have a urinary tract infection; the urine test results were normal.
However, I was prescribed antibiotics and pain relievers.
This month, on June 13, I had sexual intercourse with protection, but my period has not arrived yet.
Could this be due to the medication or could I be pregnant? If I am pregnant, can I request a prescription for abortion pills from a doctor without parental consent? Thank you.

Jie, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/06/24

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, you should absolutely not rely on the safe period; it is best to take preventive measures beforehand.
The chances of pregnancy should be low, and if you do become pregnant and are over 20 years old, you will not need a guardian.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

Missed periods can be concerning, especially when they deviate from your regular cycle. Based on the information you've provided, there are several potential factors that could be influencing your missed period.

Firstly, it's important to consider the timing of your menstrual cycle. You mentioned that your last period was from May 11 to May 15. If your cycle is typically regular, missing your period in June could be attributed to a few different factors. One of the most common reasons for a missed period is pregnancy, especially since you engaged in sexual activity on June 13. Even with the use of protection, no contraceptive method is 100% effective, and there is always a small risk of pregnancy.

In addition to the possibility of pregnancy, other factors could be at play. Stress is a significant contributor to menstrual irregularities. You mentioned experiencing some health issues, including a urinary tract infection (UTI) and the subsequent use of antibiotics. While antibiotics themselves typically do not affect menstrual cycles directly, the stress of dealing with an infection and the medications involved can lead to hormonal fluctuations that might delay your period.

Moreover, hormonal imbalances can also be a reason for missed periods. Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or significant weight changes can disrupt the regularity of your cycle. If you have a history of irregular periods or other hormonal issues, this could be a contributing factor.

Regarding your question about obtaining medication for a potential pregnancy, it is crucial to approach this matter with caution. If you suspect you might be pregnant, the first step is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period. If the test is positive, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation and to discuss your options. In the United States, medication for abortion, such as mifepristone and misoprostol, is available, but it typically requires a prescription from a healthcare professional. This is to ensure that the process is safe and that you receive appropriate medical guidance.

If the home pregnancy test is negative and your period still does not arrive, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a more sensitive blood test to confirm or rule out pregnancy and investigate other potential causes for your missed period.
In summary, the missed period could be due to several factors, including the possibility of pregnancy, stress, hormonal imbalances, or the effects of recent health issues. It is essential to take a home pregnancy test and consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation and to discuss your options moving forward. Your health and well-being should always be the priority, and professional guidance is crucial in navigating these concerns.
