Swelling After Foreskin Retraction: When to See a Doctor - Urology

Swollen foreskin?

Why is the foreskin swollen the day after being retracted (and hasn't been returned yet), and it has been swollen for 4 days? It seems to be edema.
Sometimes it appears to be less swollen, but after a while, it swells up again.
Should I see a doctor, or should I wait for it to heal?

Dr. Xu Wencang reply Urology

The foreskin is too tight and is stuck.
Quickly see a doctor to push it back, and you may need a circumcision afterward.

Swelling after foreskin retraction can be a concerning issue, especially if it persists for several days. It is important to understand the potential causes of this swelling and when it is necessary to seek medical attention.

When the foreskin is retracted, it can sometimes lead to swelling due to a few reasons. One common cause is edema, which is the accumulation of fluid in the tissues. This can happen if the foreskin is retracted for an extended period, leading to irritation and inflammation. Additionally, if the foreskin was retracted forcefully or if there was any trauma during the retraction process, it could also result in swelling.

In your case, since the swelling has persisted for four days and fluctuates in size, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. Here are some signs that indicate you should see a doctor:
1. Persistent Swelling: If the swelling does not subside after a few days, it could indicate an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

2. Pain or Discomfort: If you are experiencing significant pain or discomfort in addition to the swelling, this could be a sign of infection or other complications.

3. Redness or Heat: If the swollen area appears red or feels warm to the touch, it may indicate an infection, which requires prompt medical attention.

4. Difficulty with Urination: If the swelling is affecting your ability to urinate comfortably, this is another reason to seek medical help.

5. Foul Odor or Discharge: Any unusual discharge or foul odor from the area could suggest an infection that needs treatment.

In general, if the swelling is mild and there are no other concerning symptoms, you might consider monitoring the situation for a short period. Applying a cold compress to the area can help reduce swelling and discomfort. However, if the swelling worsens or if you develop any of the symptoms mentioned above, it is crucial to see a doctor.

In terms of treatment, a healthcare provider may perform a physical examination to assess the swelling and determine the underlying cause. Depending on the findings, they may recommend treatments such as anti-inflammatory medications, topical ointments, or, in some cases, a procedure to address any complications.

In summary, while some swelling after foreskin retraction can be normal, persistent or worsening symptoms warrant a visit to a healthcare professional. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
