Am I pregnant or is my period about to start?

Hello doctor, my last menstrual period started on June 7 and ended on June 12.
I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend on June 27 without a condom, and he did not ejaculate; he was inside for less than 20 seconds.
However, since early July, I have been experiencing lower back pain and a feeling of pressure in my lower abdomen, as if something is about to come down but hasn't.
I took a pregnancy test on July 10, and it showed one line.
Could this be premenstrual syndrome, or are these signs of early pregnancy?

Hello, a single line usually indicates that you are not pregnant.
It's best to use contraceptive measures beforehand.
If your period does not arrive after waiting another week, it is advisable to see a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to distinguishing between pregnancy symptoms and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), it can be quite challenging, especially when you've had unprotected sex. Based on your timeline, you had your last menstrual period from June 7 to June 12, and then you engaged in unprotected intercourse on June 27. Given that you did not experience ejaculation during this encounter, the risk of pregnancy is lower, but not entirely absent, as pre-ejaculate fluid can contain sperm.

You mentioned experiencing symptoms such as lower back pain and a feeling of heaviness in your lower abdomen since early July. These symptoms can indeed be associated with both PMS and early pregnancy. PMS typically occurs in the luteal phase of your menstrual cycle, which is the time between ovulation and the start of your next period. Common symptoms of PMS include mood swings, breast tenderness, bloating, fatigue, and abdominal cramps. On the other hand, early pregnancy symptoms can also include similar signs, such as cramping, breast tenderness, and fatigue, along with potential nausea and changes in appetite.

The fact that you took a pregnancy test on July 10 and received a negative result (one line) suggests that you are not pregnant, especially if it was taken at least a week after your potential ovulation date. Pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period, as they measure the hormone hCG, which is produced after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. If your next expected period is around July 7-12, it would be advisable to wait until after this date to retest if your period does not arrive.

Your symptoms of lower back pain and abdominal discomfort could very well be attributed to PMS, especially if they coincide with the typical timing of your menstrual cycle. However, if these symptoms persist or worsen, or if you experience any unusual symptoms such as heavy bleeding, severe pain, or other concerning signs, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, while your symptoms could indicate either PMS or early pregnancy, the negative pregnancy test and the timing of your symptoms suggest that it is more likely related to PMS. If your period does not arrive as expected, consider retesting for pregnancy or consulting with a healthcare professional for further guidance. It's essential to monitor your body and seek medical advice if you have any concerns about your reproductive health.
