Frequent urination issues?
Hello Doctor: Since the first year of high school, there was an incident where I felt the urge to urinate but held it in and didn't go.
After returning home, I found that I couldn't urinate at all and could only drip a little.
Later, I developed a frequent urge to urinate, feeling very urgent but only able to pass a small amount each time.
After several visits to the restroom, I eventually went to a urology clinic two weeks later to discuss my symptoms with the doctor.
I had a urine test, but the bladder seemed fine.
The doctor mentioned that it might be due to excessive stress causing the frequent urination and prescribed some medication.
This issue has persisted for over two years, but it has improved somewhat.
However, whenever I stand or jump rope, I still feel the urge to urinate, and my bladder feels full (the urge to urinate).
Is this a residual effect from the bladder being injured? What methods can help resolve the frequent urination issue? Recently, I've been working, and the frequent urge to urinate often makes me uncomfortable.
P.S.
I have a habit of masturbation; could this be one of the causes? Thank you for your response, Doctor.

More Info
Frequent urination, or polyuria, can be a distressing condition that significantly impacts daily life. It can stem from various causes, including physiological, psychological, and lifestyle factors. Understanding these causes is crucial for effective management and relief.
Causes of Frequent Urination
1. Physiological Factors:
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Infections can irritate the bladder, leading to increased urgency and frequency of urination.
- Bladder Conditions: Conditions like interstitial cystitis or bladder overactivity can cause frequent urges to urinate.
- Prostate Issues: In men, an enlarged prostate can obstruct urine flow, leading to frequent urination.
- Diabetes: Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes can lead to increased urination due to high blood sugar levels.
- Kidney Issues: Conditions affecting kidney function can also result in changes in urination patterns.
2. Psychological Factors:
- Anxiety and Stress: Psychological stress can manifest physically, leading to increased urinary frequency. This is often referred to as "nervous bladder."
- Panic Disorders: Individuals with panic disorders may experience heightened anxiety about needing to urinate, which can exacerbate the frequency.
3. Lifestyle Factors:
- Fluid Intake: High fluid intake, especially of diuretics like caffeine and alcohol, can lead to increased urination.
- Physical Activity: Activities that put pressure on the bladder, such as jumping or running, can trigger the urge to urinate.
Solutions for Relief
1. Medical Evaluation:
- It is essential to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. This may include urine tests, imaging studies, and possibly a referral to a urologist for further assessment.
2. Medication:
- Depending on the underlying cause, medications may be prescribed. For example, anticholinergics can help manage bladder overactivity, while antibiotics may be necessary for UTIs.
3. Behavioral Techniques:
- Bladder Training: Gradually increasing the time between urination can help train the bladder to hold more urine.
- Scheduled Voiding: Setting specific times to urinate can help manage urgency and frequency.
4. Lifestyle Modifications:
- Fluid Management: Monitoring and possibly reducing fluid intake, especially before activities that may trigger urgency, can be beneficial.
- Dietary Changes: Reducing caffeine and alcohol can help decrease bladder irritation.
5. Stress Management:
- Techniques such as mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral therapy, or relaxation exercises can help manage anxiety and stress, potentially reducing the frequency of urination.
6. Physical Therapy:
- Pelvic floor exercises can strengthen the muscles that support the bladder and may help improve symptoms.
Conclusion
Frequent urination can be a complex issue with multiple contributing factors. It is essential to approach this condition holistically, considering both physical and psychological aspects. If you have experienced a significant change in your urination patterns, particularly following an incident of holding urine, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can help determine the underlying cause and develop a tailored treatment plan to alleviate your symptoms. Remember, while lifestyle factors and psychological stress can play a significant role, persistent or severe symptoms warrant professional evaluation to rule out more serious conditions.
