Will Cyst Removal Leave Scars on My Face? - Dermatology

Cyst scar

Hello, doctor.
Recently, I developed a sebaceous cyst on the right cheekbone of my face.
After seeing a doctor, I received an injection.
Will this leave a scar or cause hyperpigmentation? Also, since the cyst is located close to my eye, is it suitable for surgery? If surgery is performed, will it also leave a scar? Since it's in a very visible area on my face, I would prefer not to have any scarring.

Dman, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/07/11

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology

Severe inflammation or post-surgery can both potentially lead to scarring.

When it comes to cyst removal, particularly on the face, concerns about scarring and pigmentation changes are quite common. The good news is that with proper medical techniques and post-operative care, the likelihood of significant scarring can be minimized.
Cysts, such as epidermoid cysts or pilar cysts, are generally benign and can be removed through a minor surgical procedure. The method of removal can influence the potential for scarring. For instance, if the cyst is excised properly, the surgeon will aim to make the incision in a natural skin fold or along the lines of tension in the skin, which can help reduce the visibility of any resulting scar. Additionally, the size of the cyst and the technique used for removal can also impact the final appearance of the scar.

In your case, since the cyst is located near the eye, it is crucial to consult with a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon who specializes in facial procedures. They will evaluate the cyst's size, location, and your skin type to determine the best approach for removal. If the cyst is small and the procedure is performed carefully, the risk of scarring can be significantly reduced.

Regarding your concerns about pigmentation changes, it is important to note that any surgical procedure can lead to temporary changes in skin color, especially in individuals with darker skin tones. Post-operative care plays a vital role in minimizing these risks. After the procedure, it is essential to follow your doctor's instructions, which may include keeping the area clean, applying prescribed ointments, and avoiding sun exposure. Sun protection is particularly important, as UV rays can exacerbate pigmentation issues, leading to darker scars.

If you are worried about scarring, there are several treatments available post-surgery that can help improve the appearance of scars. These include silicone gel sheets, topical treatments containing ingredients like silicone or vitamin E, and in some cases, laser therapy or microneedling after the scar has fully healed. Consulting with your dermatologist about these options can provide you with a tailored plan to address any concerns you may have.

In summary, while there is always a possibility of scarring with any surgical procedure, the risk can be minimized with proper technique and aftercare. It is essential to have a thorough discussion with your healthcare provider about your concerns and the best approach for cyst removal in your specific case. They will be able to guide you through the process and help you achieve the best possible outcome with minimal scarring.
