Concussion from a car accident?
Hello Doctor: Last month, I had an accident while riding my bike on a rainy and slippery road, and I fell, hitting the back of my head.
I was wearing a helmet, but I only remember a little bit from the time of the incident until I got to the hospital.
The doctor said I only had a headache and that there was nothing serious, so I didn't undergo any tests and went home to rest.
However, when I got home, I vomited for two days and slept much longer than usual.
I felt like the room was spinning while lying in bed, and I was very dizzy! These symptoms persisted for over a week, but recently they have returned, and I have been experiencing insomnia and poor sleep.
Should I seek medical attention? Thank you!

At that time, there may have been a mild concussion, which could affect some memory and attention.
The dizziness is likely related to the displacement of otoliths in the semicircular canals of the inner ear following the impact, which usually resolves on its own.
The recent symptoms refer to the dizziness, which may recur when one is too fatigued or under significant stress.
Sleep can be easily affected by the fear caused by dizziness, so it may be advisable to seek medical attention for examination and treatment.

More Info
It sounds like you are experiencing a range of concerning symptoms following your motorcycle accident, particularly after sustaining a blow to the back of your head. Given your description, it is crucial to understand that even with a helmet on, concussions can still occur, and the symptoms you are experiencing warrant further medical evaluation.
Concussions are a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that can result from a blow to the head or a violent shaking of the head and body. Symptoms of a concussion can vary widely and may include headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, balance issues, and sleep disturbances, among others. The fact that you experienced vomiting and prolonged drowsiness after your accident is particularly concerning, as these can be signs of a more serious injury.
The symptoms you describe—persistent headaches, dizziness, a sensation of the room spinning (which could indicate vertigo), and sleep disturbances—are common in individuals who have suffered a concussion. The recurrence of these symptoms after an initial period of improvement suggests that your brain may still be recovering from the injury, or there may be other underlying issues that need to be addressed.
It is important to note that symptoms of a concussion can sometimes appear days or even weeks after the initial injury. This delayed onset can make it challenging to connect the symptoms back to the accident. Additionally, the presence of insomnia and difficulty sleeping can further complicate recovery, as adequate rest is essential for brain healing.
Given the recurrence of your symptoms and the impact they are having on your daily life, I strongly recommend that you seek medical attention. A healthcare provider, particularly one specializing in neurology or sports medicine, can conduct a thorough evaluation, which may include a neurological examination and possibly imaging studies like a CT scan or MRI to rule out any structural damage to the brain.
In the meantime, it is advisable to avoid activities that could risk further injury, such as riding your motorcycle or engaging in contact sports, until you have been cleared by a medical professional. Rest is crucial, but it is also important to engage in light activities as tolerated, as prolonged inactivity can sometimes exacerbate symptoms.
Additionally, consider keeping a symptom diary to track when your symptoms occur, their severity, and any potential triggers. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in determining the best course of action for your recovery.
In summary, your symptoms following the motorcycle accident are concerning and should not be ignored. Please seek medical attention as soon as possible to ensure a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Early intervention can significantly improve outcomes and help you return to your normal activities safely.
