After drinking cold beverages during menstruation, I noticed bleeding again in the evening?
Hello doctor, my period usually lasts about five days.
It started on July 7th, and by today (the 12th) around noon, there was not much bleeding.
After that, I didn't see any blood when I went to the bathroom, so I didn't use any sanitary pads.
However, after drinking a cold beverage, around 9 PM, I felt like I was leaking something.
I quickly went to the bathroom and found blood on my underwear, which had also soaked through to my pants.
When I wiped, there were also some blood clots similar to menstrual tissue, and even with slight pressure, more blood came out.
After that, the bleeding stopped.
Could this be due to drinking something cold causing contractions, or is there another reason?

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
There are many possibilities for this situation.
It could be due to the effects of cold drinks, irregular menstruation, or an early miscarriage mistaken for a period.
Please continue to monitor the situation.
If there is no ongoing bleeding and no abdominal pain, it should be fine.
However, if there is persistent bleeding or abdominal pain, you should go to the hospital for an examination.
Sincerely, Dr.

Drinking cold beverages and its potential effects on menstrual flow is a topic that often raises questions and concerns among women. While many people believe that consuming cold drinks can lead to various health issues, including affecting menstrual cycles, scientific evidence supporting this claim is limited.
Firstly, it's important to understand that menstrual flow can be influenced by a variety of factors, including hormonal changes, stress levels, diet, and overall health. The menstrual cycle is regulated by complex hormonal interactions, primarily involving estrogen and progesterone. Any significant changes in these hormone levels can lead to variations in menstrual flow, including the timing, duration, and amount of bleeding.
In your case, you mentioned that you experienced a sudden increase in bleeding after consuming a cold beverage. While it might seem logical to connect the two events, there is no substantial scientific evidence to suggest that drinking cold beverages directly affects menstrual flow. The body is quite adept at regulating its internal temperature, and the consumption of cold drinks is unlikely to cause significant physiological changes that would lead to increased menstrual bleeding.
However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. For some individuals, particularly those with sensitive digestive systems, consuming cold beverages may lead to discomfort or cramping. This discomfort could potentially be misinterpreted as changes in menstrual flow. Additionally, if you were already nearing the end of your menstrual cycle, it is possible that the bleeding you experienced was a natural continuation of your cycle rather than a direct result of drinking cold beverages.
Another factor to consider is the presence of blood clots in your menstrual flow. The appearance of clots can occur for various reasons, including hormonal fluctuations, uterine contractions, or even the position of the uterus. If you notice significant changes in your menstrual flow, such as unusually heavy bleeding, large clots, or prolonged periods, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional. They can evaluate your symptoms, perform necessary tests, and provide guidance tailored to your specific situation.
In conclusion, while drinking cold beverages is a common concern among women regarding its potential effects on menstrual flow, there is no strong scientific basis to support the idea that it directly influences menstrual bleeding. If you continue to experience unusual changes in your menstrual cycle or have concerns about your reproductive health, it is always best to seek advice from a qualified healthcare provider. They can help you understand your symptoms and determine if any underlying issues need to be addressed. Remember, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and staying hydrated are essential for overall well-being, including menstrual health.
