Semen volume issues?

Doctor, I haven't masturbated for a while (about a month), and one day I masturbated twice with a 19-hour interval between the first and second time.
The first ejaculation was about 2 to 3 milliliters (I'm not sure if that's a normal amount), but the second time was much less, just a small amount with a few drops (around 2 to 3 drops).
However, I haven't experienced any discomfort in my body.
Is this considered normal, or should I get checked?

Xiao Wen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/07/14

Dr. Lin Wenxu reply Urology

When it comes to understanding semen volume and ejaculation, it's important to recognize that individual experiences can vary widely. In your case, you mentioned that after a month of abstinence, you masturbated twice in one day, with the first ejaculation producing about 2-3 milliliters of semen and the second ejaculation being significantly less, with only a few drops.
Firstly, let's address what is considered a normal semen volume. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the average volume of semen per ejaculation is typically between 1.5 to 5 milliliters. Your first ejaculation of 2-3 milliliters falls within this normal range, which suggests that your body is functioning properly in terms of semen production.
The decrease in volume during your second ejaculation is also not uncommon. After an ejaculation, the body requires time to replenish the seminal fluid. The time interval between your two sessions (19 hours) is generally sufficient for some recovery, but it may not be enough for a full replenishment, especially if you have not ejaculated for an extended period prior to that. It's normal for the second ejaculation to be less in volume, particularly if the first one was relatively recent.
Additionally, factors such as hydration, overall health, and frequency of ejaculation can influence semen volume. If you are well-hydrated and healthy, your body should be able to produce a normal amount of semen. However, if you notice persistent changes in volume, consistency, or any discomfort during ejaculation, it may be worth consulting a healthcare professional for further evaluation.

In your case, since you reported no discomfort or other symptoms, it seems that your experience is within the normal range. However, if you have concerns about your sexual health or if you experience any unusual symptoms, such as pain, changes in libido, or other significant changes in your sexual function, it would be advisable to seek a medical consultation.
In summary, your experience appears to be normal based on the information provided. The first ejaculation's volume is within the average range, and the second ejaculation's reduced volume is not unusual after a recent ejaculation. If you continue to have concerns or if your situation changes, don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance.
