Penile issues

Hello doctor, I am currently 12 years old, and my erect penis measures only 4 centimeters, which I feel is very short.
My glans can now retract on its own; I used to be unable to do that, but after pushing it daily, I can now expose it.
I can also retract it back in.
I'm unsure if this size is normal.

Understanding penis size and development during preadolescence can be a source of concern for many young boys. At the age of 12, it is important to recognize that puberty is a highly individualized process, and there is a wide range of what is considered "normal" when it comes to physical development.

Firstly, let's address the size of your penis. According to various studies and medical guidelines, the average penis size for boys around the age of 12 can vary significantly. While some boys may have a penis size that is larger or smaller than average, it is crucial to understand that growth patterns differ from person to person. At 12 years old, many boys are just beginning their journey through puberty, and significant changes can occur over the next few years.
Your reported size of 4 cm when erect is on the lower end of the spectrum, but it is not uncommon for boys at this age. It is essential to remember that penis size does not determine masculinity or self-worth. Many boys experience anxiety about their size, especially when comparing themselves to peers. However, as you continue to grow and develop, it is likely that your penis will also grow in size.
Regarding the ability to expose your glans (the head of the penis), this is a positive sign of normal development. The fact that you can retract your foreskin and expose the glans indicates that you are progressing in your physical development. It is common for boys to experience varying degrees of foreskin tightness, and many will find that they can gradually retract it more easily as they grow older. If you experience any pain or difficulty when retracting your foreskin, it may be worth discussing with a healthcare provider to ensure that everything is developing normally.

It is also important to note that during puberty, boys will experience a range of physical changes, including growth spurts, changes in body hair, and voice deepening. These changes are driven by hormonal shifts in the body, primarily testosterone. The timing of these changes can vary widely; some boys may start developing earlier, while others may take longer.
If you are feeling particularly anxious about your development, it might be helpful to talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent or a healthcare provider. They can provide reassurance and help you understand that everyone develops at their own pace.
In summary, at 12 years old, it is completely normal to have concerns about penis size and development. Your size is within the range of normal for your age, and as you continue through puberty, you can expect to see changes. Remember that physical development is just one aspect of growing up, and it is essential to focus on overall health and well-being rather than solely on size. If you have ongoing concerns, do not hesitate to seek advice from a medical professional who can provide personalized guidance and support.
