Is it menstruation or pregnancy?
Hello, my last menstrual period started on the 19th, but this month it has been delayed.
I had unprotected intercourse on the 22nd, and today when I wiped after using the bathroom, there was a little blood, but there was none on my underwear.
My urine is yellow, but there is still no heavy bleeding.
I would like to know if this is my period or if I might be pregnant.
Should I seek medical attention immediately, or should I wait and observe? Thank you.
Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/07/23

Hello, pregnancy tests can confirm if you are pregnant, but it is best to take preventive measures beforehand.
You cannot rely solely on the safe period.
If your period is more than a week late, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to menstrual delays and the possibility of pregnancy, it’s essential to consider several factors before deciding whether to seek medical advice. Based on your description, it appears that your last menstrual period started on the 19th of last month, and you have experienced a delay this month. You also mentioned having unprotected intercourse on the 22nd, which raises the possibility of pregnancy.
The first step in addressing your concerns is to understand the typical menstrual cycle. A normal cycle can range from 21 to 35 days, with an average of about 28 days. If your period is delayed beyond your usual cycle length, it could indicate pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, stress, or other underlying health issues.
The spotting you observed when wiping could be indicative of several things. It might be implantation bleeding, which can occur when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, typically around 6 to 12 days after conception. However, it could also be the onset of your menstrual period, especially if it is light and not accompanied by the usual symptoms of menstruation.
Given that you have had unprotected intercourse, it is advisable to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are generally reliable and can provide you with an answer within a few minutes. If the test is positive, it is essential to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to confirm the pregnancy and begin prenatal care. If the test is negative and your period does not arrive within a week, you should also consult a healthcare professional to explore other potential causes for the delay.
In terms of when to seek medical advice, consider the following scenarios:
1. Positive Pregnancy Test: If you receive a positive result, contact your healthcare provider to discuss your options and next steps.
2. Negative Pregnancy Test with Continued Delay: If the test is negative but your period does not start, it’s wise to consult a doctor to rule out any hormonal issues or other medical conditions.
3. Severe Symptoms: If you experience severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, or any other concerning symptoms, seek medical attention immediately, regardless of the test results.
In summary, while it is possible that you could be pregnant, the spotting and delay could also be attributed to other factors. Taking a home pregnancy test is a practical first step, and based on the results, you can determine the need for further medical consultation. Always trust your instincts; if you feel something is off, it’s better to err on the side of caution and seek professional advice.
