Pregnancy test questions?
I would like to ask the doctor, my girlfriend had her menstrual period from June 12 to June 18.
During that time, we had intercourse on June 15, June 19, and June 27.
She took a pregnancy test on July 16 and went to a gynecological examination on July 20, both showing a single line indicating no pregnancy.
However, she still hasn't gotten her period and occasionally experiences mild cramping in her lower abdomen.
What could be the issue? I am quite worried about her...
Thank you.
Lao Wu, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/07/25

You can confirm whether you are pregnant by taking a pregnancy test 15 to 18 days after your last sexual intercourse.
A test taken on July 16 and a gynecological examination on July 20 both showed a single line, indicating that you are not pregnant.
There are many possible causes for abdominal pain, so please seek further medical evaluation.
Sincerely, Dr.

Understanding delayed periods can be a source of concern for many individuals, especially when accompanied by symptoms such as abdominal discomfort. In your girlfriend's case, there are several potential causes for her delayed menstrual cycle, and it’s important to consider both physiological and psychological factors.
Firstly, it’s essential to note that menstrual cycles can vary significantly among individuals. A typical cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days, and it is not uncommon for cycles to be irregular occasionally. Factors such as stress, changes in weight, exercise habits, and hormonal imbalances can all contribute to delays in menstruation.
In your girlfriend's situation, she had her last menstrual period from June 12 to June 18, and since then, she has experienced a delay. You mentioned that she took pregnancy tests on July 16 and July 20, both of which returned negative results. This is a good indication that pregnancy is unlikely, especially if the tests were taken correctly and at the appropriate time. However, it is important to remember that home pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period, so if her period is significantly delayed, it may be worth testing again or consulting a healthcare provider for a blood test, which can detect pregnancy earlier than a home test.
The abdominal discomfort she is experiencing could be related to several factors. One possibility is that she may be experiencing premenstrual syndrome (PMS) or symptoms associated with hormonal fluctuations. Hormonal imbalances can lead to symptoms such as bloating, cramping, and mood swings, even in the absence of a menstrual period. Additionally, conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can cause irregular periods and associated symptoms.
Stress is another significant factor that can impact menstrual cycles. Emotional stress, anxiety, or significant life changes can disrupt the hypothalamus, which regulates the hormones responsible for menstruation. If your girlfriend has been under stress, this could be a contributing factor to her delayed period.
Other medical conditions, such as thyroid disorders or other hormonal imbalances, can also lead to changes in menstrual cycles. If her period does not return soon, it may be advisable for her to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. A doctor can perform blood tests to check hormone levels, assess for any underlying conditions, and provide guidance on how to manage her symptoms.
In summary, while there are several potential reasons for your girlfriend's delayed period, including stress, hormonal imbalances, and other medical conditions, it is crucial to monitor her symptoms. If her period does not arrive soon or if her discomfort worsens, seeking medical advice is recommended. A healthcare provider can offer a more personalized assessment and appropriate treatment options. In the meantime, providing emotional support and encouraging her to take care of her physical and mental well-being can be beneficial.
