Post-Surgery Exercise Restrictions After Septoplasty: What You Need to Know - Otolaryngology

After surgery for a deviated septum, is it necessary to avoid exercise?

Hello Doctor, I underwent surgery for a deviated septum on July 21 (my attending physician also removed the enlarged inferior turbinate polyps during the procedure).
My surgery was postponed due to a typhoon, and I had already signed up for a basketball tournament on July 30-31 several months prior.
The doctor advised me not to engage in vigorous exercise or play sports for one month post-surgery, but the tournament falls on July 30-31, which is 9-10 days after my surgery.
I would like to ask what the reasons are for avoiding vigorous exercise after surgery? (If the concern is about the wound reopening, would avoiding nasal impact and primarily breathing through my mouth during the game reduce the risk of the wound reopening?) If I really need to participate in the tournament, what should I be cautious about?

Hello, engaging in intense exercise after surgery may lead to increased blood pressure, which could cause rebleeding from incompletely healed wounds.
The best approach is to avoid vigorous activities.
If avoidance is not possible, there may be a higher risk of nasal bleeding.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

After undergoing septoplasty, it is crucial to adhere to your surgeon's recommendations regarding post-operative care and activity restrictions. The primary reason for avoiding vigorous activities, such as playing basketball, within the first month after surgery is to minimize the risk of complications, including bleeding, swelling, and potential disruption of the surgical site.
During the initial healing phase, the tissues inside your nose are particularly vulnerable. Engaging in high-impact sports can increase blood flow and pressure in the nasal area, which may lead to bleeding or even the reopening of the surgical site. The nasal passages are delicate, and any trauma, even if minor, can compromise the healing process.
In your case, participating in a basketball game just 9 to 10 days post-surgery could pose significant risks. Even if you take precautions, such as avoiding direct contact to your nose and breathing through your mouth, the unpredictable nature of sports can lead to situations where your nose might be inadvertently bumped or jarred. This could result in complications that may require additional medical intervention.

If you feel that you must participate in the game, here are some considerations to keep in mind:
1. Consult Your Surgeon: Before making any decisions, it is essential to discuss your intentions with your surgeon. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and healing progress.

2. Protective Gear: If you do decide to play, consider wearing protective gear, such as a face mask or shield, to minimize the risk of injury to your nose.

3. Avoid Physical Contact: Try to avoid situations where you might be in close contact with other players, as this increases the risk of accidental bumps or hits.

4. Monitor Symptoms: Pay close attention to how you feel during the game. If you experience any discomfort, bleeding, or unusual symptoms, stop playing immediately and seek medical attention if necessary.

5. Post-Game Care: After the game, monitor your nose for any signs of bleeding or swelling. If you notice any concerning symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.

6. Follow-Up Appointments: Ensure you attend all follow-up appointments with your surgeon to monitor your healing process. They may adjust your activity restrictions based on your recovery.

In summary, while the desire to participate in sports is understandable, prioritizing your health and recovery is paramount. Engaging in vigorous activities too soon after surgery can lead to complications that may prolong your recovery or necessitate further treatment. Always consult with your healthcare provider before making decisions about returning to physical activities post-surgery.
