Could I have anxiety disorder?

Hello, doctor.
This issue has been troubling me for a long time, and it occurs more frequently when work consumes too much of my mental energy and when I'm under a lot of stress.
My symptoms include a very sore and numb feeling in my thighs and calves, which is quite bothersome and makes it hard for me to sit still.
I work in an office, and it’s particularly difficult during meetings when I have to endure this discomfort—it’s really painful! I often feel like crying and suddenly find it hard to focus on tasks.
Other parts of my body also start to feel sore and numb, and I become very sensitive to noise and irritable.
I constantly have to pinch my hands to create a painful sensation just to temporarily distract myself, but the effect only lasts for a minute or half a minute.
I have previously consulted a therapist, but it didn’t help at all.
Talking about it doesn’t alleviate my stress, so I don’t seek out listening services.
Although I appear fine on the surface during these episodes, both my body and mind are suffering.
Is this considered serious? Should I see a doctor?

Hello Jenny,
You are currently experiencing muscle soreness and other physical discomforts, along with emotional symptoms such as feeling unwell, pain, distress, and a desire to cry.
It seems that you may be relying on physical pain to express your inner turmoil.
Additionally, prolonged exposure to high levels of stress can lead to burnout, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome.
Generally, if you are experiencing significant distress or impairment in social functioning that persists over time, it indicates that you may need further assistance.
I recommend seeking an evaluation and follow-up with a psychiatrist to better understand your situation and to discuss the most suitable treatment plan for you.
Wishing you all the best!
Sincerely,
Dr.

Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing significant distress that may be related to anxiety disorder. The symptoms you mentioned, such as feelings of tightness and numbness in your legs, difficulty sitting still, and overwhelming emotions during meetings, are common manifestations of anxiety. Additionally, the physical sensations you describe, including the need to apply pressure to your hands to distract yourself, suggest that your anxiety may be causing somatic symptoms—physical manifestations of emotional distress.

Anxiety disorders can present in various ways, and they often include both psychological and physical symptoms. The feelings of restlessness, irritability, and the urge to cry are indicative of heightened anxiety levels. It's also important to note that anxiety can lead to a cycle where physical discomfort exacerbates emotional distress, making it even harder to cope.

Your experience of feeling overwhelmed in meetings and your sensitivity to noise and your environment are also significant. These can be signs of heightened anxiety sensitivity, where external stimuli become more pronounced and difficult to manage. This can lead to a sense of being trapped in your own body, which is distressing and can further contribute to feelings of helplessness.

It's concerning that you have previously sought help from a counselor without finding it beneficial. This can happen, as not every therapeutic approach works for everyone. It may be worth exploring different types of therapy or even considering medication if your symptoms are significantly impacting your daily life. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is often effective for anxiety disorders, as it helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors.

Given the severity of your symptoms and the impact they have on your ability to function, I strongly recommend seeking professional help. A mental health professional can provide a comprehensive evaluation to determine whether you meet the criteria for an anxiety disorder or another mental health condition. They can also help you develop coping strategies tailored to your specific needs.

In the meantime, consider incorporating some self-care practices into your routine. Techniques such as mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, and regular physical activity can help reduce anxiety levels. Engaging in activities that you enjoy and that promote relaxation can also be beneficial.

It's crucial to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Many people experience anxiety, and with the right support and treatment, it is possible to manage symptoms effectively. Don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider who can guide you through this process and help you find the relief you deserve.
