At 18 years old, I am concerned about the possibility of having glaucoma?
First of all, I haven't seen a doctor yet, and I'm worried about not having any migraines or headaches, as well as symptoms like eye pressure and pain.
In the evenings, when I look at most of the street lights (white and yellow), I don't experience any halos, but with some particularly bright white lights, I notice a faint red-green shadow around them, somewhat resembling a rainbow (I'm not sure if this can be classified as halos).
I have about 100 degrees of astigmatism and approximately 200-300 degrees of myopia.
Is there a possibility of having glaucoma?

At the age of 18, it is understandable to have concerns about glaucoma, especially if you are experiencing visual symptoms. However, it is important to note that glaucoma is relatively rare in young individuals, particularly if there are no significant risk factors present. The symptoms you describe, such as seeing halos around lights or experiencing visual disturbances, can be attributed to various conditions, including refractive errors like myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism, rather than glaucoma.
Glaucoma is primarily characterized by increased intraocular pressure (IOP) that can lead to optic nerve damage and subsequent vision loss. The most common form, primary open-angle glaucoma, typically develops slowly and may not present noticeable symptoms until significant damage has occurred. Risk factors for glaucoma include a family history of the disease, elevated IOP, age, and certain medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Since you are relatively young and do not report any family history of glaucoma or other risk factors, the likelihood of developing glaucoma at this age is low.
The visual phenomenon you described, such as seeing a rainbow-like halo around bright lights, could be related to your astigmatism or other refractive issues. Astigmatism can cause light to scatter in different directions, leading to visual distortions. It is also worth noting that high levels of myopia can lead to changes in the eye's structure, which may contribute to visual symptoms but do not directly indicate glaucoma.
To address your concerns, it is crucial to schedule an appointment with an eye care professional. A comprehensive eye examination can assess your eye health, including measuring your IOP, examining your optic nerve, and evaluating your visual field. These tests are essential in ruling out glaucoma and other potential issues. If your eye pressure is within the normal range and your optic nerve appears healthy, it is likely that your symptoms are related to refractive errors rather than glaucoma.
In the meantime, managing your anxiety about these symptoms is important. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate physical symptoms, including those related to vision. Engaging in relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, or yoga, may help alleviate some of your concerns. Additionally, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and adequate sleep, can contribute to overall well-being and may help reduce anxiety levels.
In summary, while it is natural to worry about your eye health, especially when experiencing unusual visual symptoms, the likelihood of developing glaucoma at your age is low, particularly without significant risk factors. A thorough eye examination will provide clarity and peace of mind. Remember, early detection and management of any eye condition are key to maintaining good vision and eye health.
