Ear inflammation medication drops?

Two days ago, I had an accumulation of earwax that I didn't clean, and after going to the beach, seawater got into my ear, leading to an earwax infection and inflammation.
I often have discharge, and now my right ear is constantly painful.
I saw a doctor yesterday, and they prescribed me a bottle of ear drops to use twice a day.
However, after applying the drops, it feels like water is trapped in my ear.
Ten minutes later, when I try to tilt my head to let the drops drain out, it doesn't work well; only a little comes out, and I still feel uncomfortable, like there's water in my ear.
Is this normal? Will it eventually drain out on its own if I leave it alone? The sensation of water in my ear is very uncomfortable, and I'm concerned that if the drops don't drain out, it could lead to more serious consequences.

Hello: If there is earwax or discharge in the ear, it may swell after applying ear drops, leading to an increased feeling of fullness or blockage.
It is recommended to return for cleaning 3-7 days after applying the drops to ensure complete resolution of symptoms.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Head of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Ear infections and related discomfort can be quite distressing, especially when they lead to persistent pain and a feeling of fullness in the ear. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing symptoms consistent with an outer ear infection, also known as otitis externa, which can occur when water becomes trapped in the ear canal, leading to inflammation and infection. This is often exacerbated by the presence of earwax, which can trap moisture and bacteria.

When you mentioned that you have been experiencing a sensation of water in your ear after using the prescribed ear drops, this can be a common side effect. The feeling of fullness or pressure can occur if the ear canal is swollen or if there is a buildup of fluid. It is important to follow the instructions given by your healthcare provider regarding the use of the ear drops, as they are designed to help reduce inflammation and combat infection.

Here are some key points to consider regarding your situation:
1. Follow-Up Care: If the discomfort persists or worsens, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may need to reassess your condition, especially if the ear drops do not seem to be alleviating your symptoms. Sometimes, additional treatments such as oral antibiotics or a different type of ear drop may be necessary.

2. Avoiding Water Exposure: While you are treating the infection, it is advisable to keep your ear dry. Avoid swimming or submerging your head in water, as this can exacerbate the infection and prolong healing.

3. Self-Care Techniques: While waiting for the medication to take effect, you can try some self-care techniques to alleviate discomfort. Applying a warm compress to the affected ear may help reduce pain and swelling. Over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, can also be effective in managing pain.

4. Ear Cleaning: It is generally not recommended to use cotton swabs or other objects to clean the ear canal, as this can push wax further in and potentially cause more irritation or injury. If you have excessive earwax, consult your doctor for safe removal options.

5. Potential Complications: If left untreated, an ear infection can lead to more serious complications, such as a middle ear infection (otitis media) or even hearing loss. Therefore, it is essential to address any persistent symptoms promptly.

6. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms. If you notice any new symptoms, such as fever, increased pain, or drainage of pus from the ear, seek medical attention immediately.

In summary, while the sensation of water in your ear after using ear drops can be uncomfortable, it is important to continue following your treatment plan and to communicate with your healthcare provider if your symptoms do not improve. With proper care and attention, most ear infections resolve without long-term complications. However, timely intervention is key to ensuring a full recovery and preventing any potential complications.
