Missed period, brown urine?

Hello, doctor: I got my period on June 15th.
The first three days were heavy, and then it became lighter, lasting about 6-7 days in total.
Now, I still haven't gotten my period (there was no sexual intercourse during this time; prior to my period, there was intercourse but a condom was used throughout, and my boyfriend withdrew before ejaculation).
This morning, I noticed pink in my urine, and just now at 6 PM, my urine turned brownish.
Is there a chance that I could be pregnant?

Xiao Huang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/08/16

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, based on your description, there is a possibility of pregnancy.
Even if ejaculation did not occur during intercourse, there is still a chance of conception because pre-ejaculatory fluid may contain sperm.
However, it is not possible to determine whether you are pregnant based solely on subjective symptoms.
I recommend that if your period is more than a week late, you should take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

When it comes to missed periods and unusual urine colors, many women may wonder if they could be pregnant, especially if they have had recent sexual activity. In your case, you mentioned that your last menstrual period started on June 15 and lasted for about 6-7 days, and now you have missed your period. You also noted that you had sexual intercourse before your last period, but you used a condom and your boyfriend withdrew before ejaculation.
Given these details, the likelihood of pregnancy appears to be low. Condoms are a reliable form of contraception when used correctly, and withdrawal can further reduce the risk of pregnancy. However, no contraceptive method is 100% effective, and there is always a small chance of pregnancy with any sexual activity.

The pink and brown urine you are experiencing could be attributed to several factors unrelated to pregnancy. The pink color in urine can sometimes indicate the presence of blood, which may be due to a urinary tract infection (UTI), dehydration, or even irritation from vigorous activity. Brown urine can also be a sign of dehydration or the presence of certain foods or medications. It is important to consider other symptoms you may be experiencing, such as pain during urination, abdominal pain, or any unusual discharge, as these could provide additional clues about your condition.

If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, the best course of action is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced during pregnancy. For the most accurate results, it is recommended to take the test after you have missed your period, as this allows for higher levels of hCG to accumulate in your urine.

If the test is negative and you continue to experience unusual symptoms, or if your period does not arrive soon, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform further evaluations, including blood tests and possibly an ultrasound, to determine the cause of your missed period and any urinary symptoms.

In summary, while the possibility of pregnancy cannot be completely ruled out, the use of condoms and withdrawal significantly lowers that risk. The changes in your urine color could be due to other factors, and monitoring your symptoms closely will be important. If you have any further concerns or if your symptoms worsen, seeking medical advice is always a prudent step.
