Post-banding of internal hemorrhoids

Hello Doctor, on August 3rd, I experienced significant bright red blood during bowel movements, possibly due to prolonged sitting throughout the day.
On August 4th, after an examination at Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital, I was diagnosed with internal hemorrhoids and underwent a hemorrhoid ligation procedure.
The doctor mentioned that my internal hemorrhoids were quite severe and scheduled a follow-up appointment for August 18th.
I felt discomfort for about two days, which improved afterward.
The internal hemorrhoid fell off on August 10th, and at that moment, there was a lot of bleeding, even to the point of having a jet-like spray of blood.
On August 12th, I noticed blood again during bowel movements, which stained the toilet red, causing me some concern.
On August 16th, I decided to return for an earlier check-up since the doctor had clinic hours.
The doctor said the wound was healing well and advised me to apply medication for the bleeding.
On August 18th, I didn't have the urge to defecate but slightly strained to maintain daily bowel movements, which resulted in a significant amount of bleeding again.
Now, as of today, August 21st, during bowel movements, I can see blood in the stool, and there is also blood when wiping, although the amount is not substantial.
I would like to ask you, Doctor, how long does it typically take for the ligation site of internal hemorrhoids to heal? Could my situation indicate other types of hemorrhoids or issues causing the bleeding? I am quite worried and tend to overthink things, so I would appreciate your clarification.

After hemorrhoid ligation, if there is significant bleeding, it is generally recommended to either perform another ligation or proceed with hemorrhoidectomy.
If the bleeding has decreased, using rectal suppositories and oral hemostatic medications is sufficient.
At the age of 21, it is common to experience more bleeding from hemorrhoids.
If there are concerns, a physician can arrange for a colonoscopy.

Recovery after hemorrhoid banding surgery, also known as rubber band ligation, can vary significantly from person to person. This procedure is commonly performed to treat internal hemorrhoids, which can cause symptoms such as bleeding, pain, and discomfort during bowel movements. Understanding the recovery process and what to expect can help alleviate concerns and promote a smoother healing experience.

After the procedure, it is not uncommon to experience some bleeding, especially in the first few days. The bleeding you described, particularly the significant amount during bowel movements, can be alarming. However, it is important to note that some bleeding is expected as the hemorrhoid tissue undergoes necrosis and eventually falls off, which typically occurs within a week or two post-procedure. The fact that you experienced heavy bleeding when the hemorrhoid fell off is consistent with the normal healing process.
In your case, since the internal hemorrhoid fell off on August 10 and you are still experiencing some bleeding, it is crucial to monitor the situation. Light bleeding or spotting can continue for several days to weeks as the area heals. However, if the bleeding becomes heavy again or if you experience severe pain, it is essential to contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Regarding your concern about whether the bleeding could be due to other issues, it is possible. While the bleeding you are experiencing is likely related to the banding procedure, other conditions such as anal fissures, other types of hemorrhoids, or even gastrointestinal issues could contribute to rectal bleeding. It is always best to discuss any new or worsening symptoms with your doctor, who can perform a thorough examination and determine if further investigation is needed.

In terms of recovery time, most patients find that their symptoms improve significantly within a week or two after the procedure. However, complete healing of the tissue can take several weeks. It is essential to maintain a high-fiber diet, stay hydrated, and avoid straining during bowel movements to facilitate healing and prevent constipation, which can exacerbate symptoms.

Your follow-up appointment on August 18 indicated that the doctor found the wound healing well, which is a positive sign. It is also important to follow any post-operative care instructions provided by your healthcare provider, including the use of topical medications or sitz baths to alleviate discomfort.

In summary, while some bleeding after hemorrhoid banding is normal, it is crucial to monitor the amount and frequency of bleeding. If you have concerns about the nature of the bleeding or if it worsens, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider. They can provide reassurance and guidance tailored to your specific situation. Remember that recovery can take time, and being proactive about your health will help ensure the best outcome.
