Myopia, astigmatism, and water exposure in the eyes?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask you a question.
Yesterday, my eye came into direct contact with water, about the amount of a bottle cap, for approximately 3 to 4 seconds.
Will my eye feel uncomfortable afterward, and do I need to see a doctor? Additionally, when I watch television, I find that I can only look for a short time before my vision drifts, and I feel unable to focus.
Is this strabismus? This situation has been occurring for about 2 to 3 months, and it didn't happen before.
Can this type of examination be performed at a general ophthalmology clinic? Thank you, doctor.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding your eye health. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a couple of different issues: potential discomfort from water exposure and difficulty focusing, which may be related to conditions such as myopia (nearsightedness) or astigmatism.
Firstly, regarding the water exposure, if your eyes were exposed to a small amount of clean water for a few seconds, it is unlikely to cause any significant harm. However, if you experience any discomfort, redness, or changes in vision afterward, it would be wise to consult an eye care professional. Water, especially if it is not sterile (like from a swimming pool or the ocean), can introduce irritants or pathogens that may lead to infections or irritation. If you notice symptoms such as persistent redness, itching, or discharge, seeking medical attention is advisable.
Now, concerning your difficulty focusing while watching television, this could be indicative of a few different issues. The sensation of your vision "shifting" or being unable to maintain focus could be related to several factors:
1. Myopia (Nearsightedness): This condition means that you can see nearby objects clearly, but distant objects appear blurry. If you have myopia, it may require corrective lenses to help you see clearly at a distance.
2. Astigmatism: This is a common refractive error caused by an irregular shape of the cornea or lens, leading to blurred or distorted vision at all distances. If you have astigmatism, it can also contribute to difficulties in focusing, especially on screens.
3. Eye Fatigue: Prolonged screen time can lead to digital eye strain, which may cause discomfort, blurred vision, and difficulty focusing. This is often exacerbated by poor lighting, glare, or improper viewing distances.
4. Strabismus (Squinting or Crossed Eyes): If your eyes are not properly aligned, it can lead to difficulties in focusing, especially when trying to view objects at a distance. This condition may require a comprehensive eye examination to diagnose.
Given that you have been experiencing these symptoms for 2-3 months, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with an eye care professional. An optometrist or ophthalmologist can perform a thorough examination, which typically includes tests for visual acuity, refraction (to determine your prescription), and assessments for any underlying conditions such as strabismus or astigmatism.
In summary, while a brief exposure to clean water is unlikely to cause significant issues, your ongoing difficulty focusing warrants further investigation. Regular eye exams are crucial, especially if you notice changes in your vision or experience discomfort. Early detection and treatment can help prevent more serious complications and improve your overall eye health. Please take care of your eyes, and don't hesitate to seek professional help if you have concerns!
