Do the side effects of UTI medications include erectile dysfunction?
Recently, I have been experiencing erections accompanied by a frequent urge to urinate, along with a sensation of incomplete bladder emptying.
Two days ago, after a consultation, the doctor diagnosed me with a urinary tract infection and prescribed medication [Urokinase-coated tablets, Naproxen extended-release tablets, Uro-Nex oral tablets].
However, last night I experienced a significant decrease in erectile function and libido.
I am unsure whether this is a side effect of the medication or a personal health issue.
Should I refrain from sexual activity during the treatment period? I would appreciate your guidance.
Thank you.

Hello, you are currently experiencing a urinary tract infection, and there is a possibility of transmitting it to your partner during this time.
As for your question about whether the medication is causing erectile issues, there is no clear evidence found in the literature.
It is recommended that you follow your physician's instructions for treatment; once your body recovers, most of your other issues should also resolve.
If you still have concerns, please follow up at the urology clinic.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common conditions that can significantly impact a person's quality of life. The medications prescribed for treating UTIs, such as the ones you mentioned (likely antibiotics and possibly medications for symptom relief), can sometimes lead to side effects, including erectile dysfunction (ED).
Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance. While it is primarily associated with psychological factors, vascular issues, and hormonal imbalances, certain medications can also contribute to this condition.
In your case, the medications prescribed for your UTI may have potential side effects that could influence erectile function. For example, some antibiotics, particularly those that affect the central nervous system, can lead to side effects such as fatigue, dizziness, and changes in mood, which may indirectly affect sexual desire and performance. Additionally, medications that relieve urinary symptoms, such as anticholinergics, can sometimes have side effects that include dry mouth, constipation, and blurred vision, but they are less commonly associated with erectile dysfunction.
Moreover, the psychological impact of experiencing frequent urination, urgency, and discomfort can also contribute to anxiety and stress, which are known factors that can exacerbate erectile dysfunction. The interplay between physical health and mental well-being is crucial; thus, the discomfort and anxiety from your UTI symptoms may be influencing your sexual health.
It is also important to consider that the onset of erectile dysfunction could be coincidental and not directly related to the medications. Factors such as stress, anxiety about your health, or even the physical discomfort from the UTI itself can play a significant role in sexual function.
Regarding your question about whether to continue sexual activity during treatment, it is generally advisable to avoid sexual intercourse until the infection is fully resolved. Engaging in sexual activity while experiencing a UTI can exacerbate symptoms and potentially lead to further complications. It is best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice based on your specific situation.
In summary, while medications for UTIs can have side effects, including potential impacts on erectile function, it is essential to consider the broader context of your health and well-being. If erectile dysfunction persists after the completion of your treatment or if you have concerns about your sexual health, it is crucial to discuss these issues with your healthcare provider. They can help determine whether the medications are the cause or if other underlying factors need to be addressed. Remember, open communication with your healthcare provider is key to managing both your UTI and any associated symptoms effectively.
