Can hair regrow after hair loss due to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)?

Hello, doctor.
Thank you for your help in answering my question.
I have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and have noticed significant hair loss since last year.
Recently, I've observed that my scalp has become increasingly sparse.
Is there a possibility for my hair to regrow? Should I see a dermatologist or a gynecologist for treatment?

Xiao Ting, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/09/11

You need to see an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN).

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder that affects many women of reproductive age. One of the symptoms associated with PCOS is hair loss, often due to an imbalance in hormone levels, particularly an increase in androgens (male hormones). This condition can lead to a type of hair loss known as androgenetic alopecia, which is characterized by thinning hair on the scalp.

When it comes to hair regrowth after experiencing hair loss due to PCOS, several factors come into play. First and foremost, the health of the hair follicles is crucial. If the hair follicles have not been permanently damaged or shrunk (a process known as miniaturization), there is a good chance that hair regrowth can occur once the underlying hormonal imbalance is addressed. Treatments for PCOS often include lifestyle changes such as weight management, diet, and exercise, as well as medications that can help regulate hormone levels.

For instance, medications such as oral contraceptives can help lower androgen levels, which may alleviate some of the symptoms associated with PCOS, including hair loss. Additionally, anti-androgen medications like spironolactone are often prescribed to help combat hair loss by blocking the effects of androgens on hair follicles. If you have started treatment and noticed improvements in your hair loss, this is a positive sign that your follicles may still be responsive.

In terms of whether you should see a dermatologist or a gynecologist, it often depends on your specific situation. A gynecologist can help manage the hormonal aspects of PCOS, while a dermatologist can provide specialized care for hair loss and scalp health. If your primary concern is hair loss, consulting a dermatologist who has experience with hair disorders may be beneficial. They can assess the condition of your scalp and hair follicles, and recommend treatments such as topical minoxidil, which is FDA-approved for hair regrowth.

It's also important to note that hair regrowth can take time. After addressing the underlying hormonal issues, it may take several months to see noticeable improvements in hair density and thickness. Patience is key, as hair growth is a slow process, and it can be disheartening to wait for results.

In summary, if your hair follicles are still healthy and you are actively treating the hormonal imbalances associated with PCOS, there is a good chance that your hair can regrow. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, adhering to prescribed treatments, and consulting with the appropriate healthcare professionals will be essential steps in your journey toward regaining your hair. If you have any concerns about your treatment or hair loss, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and support.
