Can Miscarriage Affect Menstrual Cycle Regularity? - Traditional Chinese Medicine

Will menstruation change after a miscarriage?

My menstrual cycle used to be very regular, approximately every 28 days.
However, since I had a miscarriage due to chromosomal abnormalities four months ago (when I was less than three months pregnant), my cycle has changed to every 20 days.
Is this normal? Can traditional Chinese medicine help restore my original cycle? This shorter cycle is quite inconvenient.
Thank you!

Dr. Zhuang Yihui reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

After an abnormal miscarriage, there can be disruptions in endocrine and hormonal levels, which naturally lead to irregular cycles.
It is recommended to follow the general postpartum restrictions, such as avoiding strenuous exercise, not squatting while working, refraining from anger and crying, and abstaining from sexual intercourse.
Additionally, avoid cold water and drafts; these principles should be followed for at least two weeks.
Consuming 3-4 doses of traditional Chinese medicine known as Shenghua Decoction can help promote uterine contractions and assist in the expulsion of lochia.
Ample rest is essential for recovery to normalcy.
Thank you!

Miscarriage, particularly in the early stages of pregnancy, can indeed have an impact on menstrual cycle regularity. The menstrual cycle is regulated by a complex interplay of hormones, primarily involving the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and ovaries. When a miscarriage occurs, especially due to chromosomal abnormalities, it can lead to temporary hormonal imbalances that may disrupt the regularity of your menstrual cycle.

In your case, experiencing a shift from a regular 28-day cycle to a 20-day cycle following a miscarriage is not uncommon. After a miscarriage, it may take some time for your body to readjust and for your hormonal levels to stabilize. This adjustment period can result in changes to the menstrual cycle, including variations in cycle length, flow, and symptoms.

The shorter cycle you are experiencing could be attributed to several factors. First, the hormonal changes that occur after a miscarriage can lead to a more rapid shedding of the uterine lining, resulting in a shorter cycle. Additionally, stress—both emotional and physical—can also affect your menstrual cycle. The experience of a miscarriage can be traumatic, and the body may respond to this stress by altering hormonal levels, which can further impact cycle regularity.

As for the use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) or herbal remedies to restore your menstrual cycle to its previous regularity, there is some anecdotal evidence suggesting that TCM can help regulate menstrual cycles. However, scientific research on the efficacy of TCM for this specific purpose is limited. If you are considering using herbal remedies, it is crucial to consult with a qualified healthcare provider or a licensed TCM practitioner who can assess your individual situation and recommend appropriate treatments.

In the meantime, here are some general recommendations to help support your menstrual health:
1. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Regular exercise, a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help support hormonal balance. Staying hydrated and getting adequate sleep are also essential.

2. Manage Stress: Stress management techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises can help reduce stress levels, which may positively influence your menstrual cycle.

3. Monitor Your Cycle: Keep track of your menstrual cycles, noting any changes in flow, duration, and symptoms. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in assessing your situation.

4. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If your cycle does not return to normal after a few months, or if you experience other concerning symptoms (such as severe pain or excessive bleeding), it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform necessary evaluations, including hormone level testing, to determine if there are underlying issues that need to be addressed.

In conclusion, while it is not unusual for menstrual cycles to be affected after a miscarriage, it is essential to give your body time to heal and adjust. If the changes persist or cause significant concern, seeking professional medical advice is the best course of action.
