Swelling above the right rib cage?
I have been feeling a swelling sensation above my right rib this month, and it has been uncomfortable.
Since I am unsure what the issue is, I visited a family medicine doctor, but they couldn't identify anything wrong and told me it was nothing serious.
However, the swelling sensation persists and is quite uncomfortable, even making me feel like my bones are swollen.
Which specialty should I consult for these symptoms?

If you are experiencing persistent swelling above your right rib and discomfort in that area, it is important to seek further medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause. Since you have already consulted a family physician who did not find any significant issues, it may be beneficial to see a specialist for a more thorough examination.
The most appropriate specialist to consult for your symptoms would be a gastroenterologist or an orthopedic specialist, depending on the nature of your symptoms. If the swelling is accompanied by gastrointestinal symptoms such as pain after eating, changes in bowel habits, or nausea, a gastroenterologist would be the right choice. They specialize in disorders of the digestive system, which includes the organs located in the upper abdomen, such as the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas, all of which are located near the rib cage.
On the other hand, if the swelling seems to be more related to the musculoskeletal system, such as pain or discomfort when moving or pressing on the area, an orthopedic specialist may be more appropriate. They can evaluate for any potential issues related to the ribs, muscles, or connective tissues in that region.
In addition to these specialists, if you have any concerns about potential vascular issues, such as blood clots or other circulatory problems, you might also consider seeing a vascular surgeon. They can assess the blood vessels in the area and determine if there are any abnormalities contributing to your symptoms.
When you visit the specialist, it is important to provide a detailed history of your symptoms, including when the swelling began, any associated symptoms (like pain, tenderness, or changes in appetite), and any previous medical history that may be relevant. The specialist may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to get a clearer picture of what might be causing the swelling.
In summary, given your persistent symptoms, it is advisable to seek further evaluation from a gastroenterologist or an orthopedic specialist. They will be able to conduct a more comprehensive assessment and guide you toward the appropriate treatment based on their findings. Remember, it is always better to seek a second opinion if you feel that your concerns are not being adequately addressed. Your health and comfort are paramount, and persistent symptoms should not be ignored.
