Is this considered a mental illness?

Recently, my family hired a foreign caregiver to take care of the elderly, but they mostly treat the caregiver as a servant.
They have asked the caregiver not to enter other family members' rooms, as it has become troublesome when things go missing.
However, my mother allows the caregiver to casually discard other family members' belongings and to enter others' rooms, directly questioning my mother about where the family's things have gone.
When family members confront her, the first thing she says is whether they want to kick the elderly person out.
What kind of mental illness could this be? My younger brother has had belongings worth over ten thousand dollars discarded recently, and the family is unable to communicate effectively.
We suspect that this behavior may be a form of mental illness.

Hello: I apologize, but I find the roles among family members, the elderly, and the mother in the text unclear, which may make it difficult for me to respond.
I suggest accompanying the individual to a mental health clinic for consultation (you can inform the individual that it is just an evaluation and counseling, not a medical treatment) to facilitate the assessment of the aforementioned issues.

The behavior you described raises several concerns that may indicate underlying mental health issues, but it's essential to approach this situation with sensitivity and an understanding of the complexities involved. While I cannot diagnose anyone without a thorough evaluation, I can provide insights into potential factors at play and suggest steps for addressing the situation.

First, the behavior of your family member, particularly the mother, may reflect a range of psychological issues. One possibility is that she may be experiencing symptoms of a personality disorder, such as Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) or Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). Individuals with BPD often exhibit intense emotional responses, fear of abandonment, and unstable relationships, which can lead to erratic behavior. On the other hand, those with NPD may struggle with empathy and exhibit a sense of entitlement, leading them to disregard the feelings and belongings of others.

Another consideration is the possibility of cognitive decline or dementia, especially if the individual is older. Dementia can lead to confusion, memory loss, and changes in behavior, which might explain the inability to respect boundaries regarding personal belongings and spaces. If your family member is showing signs of forgetfulness or confusion, it may be worth consulting a healthcare professional for a cognitive assessment.

Additionally, the dynamics of having a foreign caregiver in the home can create stress and tension within the family. The caregiver may be perceived as an outsider, leading to feelings of resentment or frustration among family members. This situation can exacerbate existing mental health issues or create new ones, particularly if there is a lack of clear communication and boundaries.

It's also important to consider the impact of stress on the entire family. Caregiving for elderly relatives can be emotionally and physically taxing, leading to heightened anxiety and frustration. If family members feel overwhelmed, they may react defensively or irrationally, which could explain the confrontational behavior you described.

To address these issues, open communication is crucial. It may be beneficial to have a family meeting to discuss everyone's feelings and concerns in a safe and respectful environment. Encourage family members to express their thoughts without fear of judgment. If necessary, consider involving a neutral third party, such as a family therapist or counselor, who can facilitate the conversation and help mediate conflicts.

If the behavior continues to escalate or if you believe that your family member may be experiencing a mental health crisis, it is essential to seek professional help. A mental health professional can provide a comprehensive evaluation and recommend appropriate interventions, whether that involves therapy, medication, or other support services.

In summary, while the behaviors you've described may suggest underlying mental health issues, it's essential to approach the situation with compassion and a willingness to understand the complexities involved. Open communication, professional support, and a focus on family dynamics can help address the challenges you're facing and promote a healthier environment for everyone involved.
